“Construciton Noise”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Our family has been going to this hotel for over 30 years, and while it is a little beat up, it is a great hotel, and usually a wonderful experience, usually!

What we were treated to is days of intense jack hammering and construction that could be heard all over the property, including in your room. This was done 9am to 5pm every single day. This was the worst "vacation" of all time!

Of course we brought this to the hotel managements attention, but they could not quite hear our complaints over the amazingly loud racket in the hotel lobby, really. Every time we complained, they pretended to listen, and apologize, but nothing happened, and the noise continued. There was basically a revolt at the hotel from all the guests and everyone was complaining, and yet nothing was done.

I created a video just to show what this noise was like, as it is almost too amazingly bad to describe. Even on the video, you can't really understand what it was like. And they had weddings going on this whole time too!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FM-vUl0Yts&

We talked to several guests who said they specifically asked if there was to be any construction during their visit, and the hotel lied. The hotel also told us that the work had just started when we arrived, but we checked with other guests and it had been going on for 4 previous days!

This hotel has a complete lack of respect for the guests, their time and their money. Any other hotel would have notified guest up front, or never done this level of work with any guests there. There was no free room offered, or no option to move us to another hotel. The only compensation was a $100 credit per day, which is not even reasonable considering the expense of the vacation and what we experienced.

Find any other hotel than this, you can't be sure they won't pull this on your visit. I even heard that they are already planning on further work down on the beach from a hotel employee, so this is not over yet.

Aloha,

Thank you for your patronage over the years and your candid review of your most recent stay. As a hotel nearing its 50th anniversary, renovation is a necessary aspect of maintaining the beauty of our iconic property, and with renovation comes the unfortunate side effect of noise. It is with deep regret that you experienced this during your most recent stay.

We encourage you to view our video on the same site, which shows the beautiful new flooring in The Veranda that is to be enjoyed by guests for many more years to come.

Our guest satisfaction – especially for many-time return guests such as yourself – are of our utmost concern. At your convenience, I would like to personally address your stay and restore your faith in our resort. We look forward to getting in touch soon.

Mahalo,
Roseann Grippo

“Best resort on Oah'u”

We booked through Expedia, got a great deal, were pleasantly surprised at the luxuriousness and quality of the Kahala. Rooms were lovely, private beach is lovely, service is extremely attentive and solicitous. Location is well away from the noise and traffic of Waikiki but close enough to Honolulu that all the great restaurants and other attractions are easily accessible by car.

Environs are quiet and peaceful (except for the occasional construction noise--they were renovating the lobby Veranda at the time).

Only downsides: The bar is small and not enough seats. Plumeria restaurant has a terrific breakfast buffet, but it's a bit pricey ($30). Spa prices are very expensive.

We didn't try Hoku, the restaurant, though it came highly recommended. It, too, is expensive.

Did we mention they have dolphins?

We'd come back to the Kahala for a nice relaxing peaceful vacation next time we're in Honolulu if we can get a similar deal.

Room Tip: We had a corner room with a lanai. It had a partial ocean view, view of the golf course and a second...

I appreciate receiving your feedback following your recent stay at our resort and was delighted to see that our services and facilities met your expectations. The buffet breakfast served daily is very popular, however, you may decide to select from the ala carte menu during your next stay with us. Thank you again for sharing your comments. My staff and I look forward to being of service to you again the next time you visit Honolulu. Aloha and best regards.

“Tired and Jaded...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We were originally due to stay here for a week - so glad we didn't - changed hotels (to the Four Seasons on Maui - luxury!) after 3 nights we had to stay without losing our deposit. Our room - it was tired and had seen better days. TV was mounted onto a side wall as if an after thought and no DVD. Bathroom was similarly tired and old. The room really needed an upgrade and at this sort of price (US$600 p/ n for a standard double/ US$1,200 p/ n for a junior executive) guests should be entitled to expect and receive more. Service was only passable. It seemed to me that the hotel hosts so many weddings and other events that they do the minimum - certainly Concierge and Front Desk were very poor - failing to follow-up with us on requests we left with them or being less than helpful. Pool - totally disappointing. We had no inclination to swim in it and the beach is weak too. Best part of the hotel - the dolphin pool. Location is on the other side of Diamond Head so a bit remote too. Cannot recommend.

“Top luxury hotel for Honolulu”

Top luxury hotel in secluded quiet location just a short ride to Honolulu private beach. Wonderful open air breakfast buffet. We stayed here twice it used to be a Mandarin Oriental. It changed management has slipped a little in service and wear but still very high quality. There are nicer resorts on other islands but if you have to stay on Oahu and want luxury stay here

“Beware”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Heavy construction with all day jackhammering on veranda area weekdays and weekends with no sound barrier. No warning on web site. Heard rumor pool deck and pool itself next. Staff and food good as always but place seemed dingy and stingy; beautiful lobby flower arrangement gone, worn carpets with stains, stained lanai furniture with holes. Also pool heater not working entire 5 day visit! I was told they were "waiting for a part from the mainland"...Really? tried Fedex? So be ready for a 70* chilly dip. Also $25 fee to rent a beach umbrella and stingy measures like no welcoming chocolates or at turndowns, completely empty mini bar, and morning coffee service now ends at 7:30 am. I heard a guest ask at the breakfast buffet ($77.00 for 2) what happened to the macadamia nuts..I laughed.

Aloha Seminar32678,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at The Kahala Hotel & Resort. While we were happy to hear you had a positive experience with our staff and dining outlets, it is with deep regret to hear your negative experience during the beautification of The Veranda. Rest assured, while we have recently upgraded the furniture by the pool, there is no pool renovation planned.
Should you wish to discuss your stay further, please reach out to me as your feedback is important to us. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

Warmest regards,
Flora Galla LaMontagne
