My husband and I decided to go to Newport to celebrate his 65th birthday on January 21. We go to Newport at least once a year and most times stay at the same B+B....on Clark Street and pay around $115 + taxes in winter. We like that fact that we can park and then only a brisk short walk to downtown without getting back into the car....or paying for parking. This visit to Newport was on a wkend of a small, yet messy snowstorm so we looked into staying somewhere even closer to downtown becasue of the weather. I googled the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina and found that they had a "winter get-a-way" special that included not only the room and "gated" ticket (free) parking, but also a full breakfast for 2 as well as all room TAXES in one low off season price of $109. This price was for the "city view" room but when we got to the hotel and heard that due to the weather, people had cancelled, we asked for an upgrade to a Harbor View room. The gentleman at the desk, who was not the friendliest (I don't even think he greeted us when we walked up to the desk, heck I don't think he even made eye contact) did give us a room upgrade and at no additional cost. The room was average, clean, had an older TV, Kureg coffee maker, 2 bottles of water, wonderful view of the harbor, beds comfy, bathroom small, and not really anywhere to put items other than a small glass shelf over the pedastal sink and on the toilet tank top....(and toilet was sluggish)...but for the price it was just right for a last minute weekend get-a-way for 2.
The hotel lounge/bar was very small, dark and a bit chilly. It left alot to be desired as far as any ambience but there were people sitting at the bar having cocktails and talking with the bartender who was very friendly even though she did use her fingers to put the limes in the drinks!!! What is with that with bartenders and servers???? I think there were tongs nearby or at least toothpicks but she did not use any. There is a restaurant in the hotel but we opted to go to Brick Alley Pub where we have never been dissapointed. But....they also use their fingers when putting the "fruit" in the drinks!!!! UGH!!!
We were given 2 vochers at check-in for the breakfast in the morning at the hotel. It was very good and very filling. My husband got the omlet, homefries, toast and coffee and I got eggs, bacon, homefries, toast and coffee. Big portions and bottomless coffee. The dining room was a bit chilly, but the server was very nice.
All in all this hotel was a great find and very affordable for a wkend winter get-a-way. I am not sure what the prices are "in season" but can only assume that they are much, much higher than $109 with everything included. Will look into "in season" prices but will definetely return for another "winter get-a-way"!! :)
