“Beautiful Views from Every Room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

person found this review helpful

This has become our default hotel when Newport is our destination. Every room has a great view, rooms, while a little small, are tastefully and creatively decorated and our kids love the pools.

The hotel is literally on an island, only connected to Newport by a short causeway. This means that you stay on a secluded island, but can take a shuttle and be in the middle of the action in just a few minutes.

Yes, there is a resort fee. If you choose to stay here - find out what the fee is before you arrive so you can avoid the frustration of discovering at check-in. It seems funny to me that reviewers here were surprised (it's noted on the confirmation).

Stay here and enjoy. We do!

Room Tip: If you are asking for an upgrade at check-in, don't be fooled when they "upgrade" you...

“Another perfect stay with the perfect staff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Newport this weekend and I couldn't wait to write another raving review for this GREAT hotel. To preface this, we travel a lot and have written both good and bad reviews on Tripadvisor depending on what we encountered at each hotel. We don't hesitate to give a 5 star rating if we're treated accordingly. We also don't hesitate to give a 1 star review if warranted. Well, the Hyatt Regency Newport certainly earned our FIVE STAR review once again!

To start with, the only reason we chose to go back this year was because of Holly at the front desk. In December of 2010 when we stayed there the first time, she was SO pleasant and accomodating that we vowed we'd return again strictly due to her professional and personable treatment to all of the guests. Well, this time not only was Holly terrific (as expected) but we were fortunate enough to encounter yet another wonderful and sweet front desk clerk with every bit of the same professional and personable demeanor as Holly has. Her name was Melody and she is just as warm, helpful and friendly as Holly is. This suggests to me that it must be the Management of the Hyatt Regency Newport that sets the benchmark of excellence and that is undoubtedly the reason it is unsurpassed by any other hotels where we've stayed (and we've stayed at a lot of hotels). Virtually every employee we encountered this weekend showed that they were happy to be working there and genuinely glad to make everyones' stay as perfect as possible. From the front desk personel to the waitresses and waiters in the restaurant/lounge to the housekeeping and cleaning staff, everyone was always smiling and very personable whenever we'd see them. We honestly felt like royalty all weekend once again and that's what will always keep us coming back again and again.

As for our room: WOW! We had the Captain Quarters 2-queen bed room with a beautiful view of Narragansett Bay and the Newport Bridge. We had stayed in this room the last time we were here and love it. Cleanliness? Absolutely flawless. You could eat off the floor in the bathroom! The bed was so comfortable, stylish and clean. I accidently ordered the wrong movie on TV (on demand). We called the front desk right away and it was immediately removed from our bill without question. I've had that occur at other hotels and called right away yet I still ended up haggling at checkout the next day. Not here though. They obviously get it and that's why we will always keep coming back.

This hotel clearly understands what it takes to be accomodating and General Manager John Karchner is obviously the reason why. Well done Mr Karchner. Please pass this review and especially our sincere thanks to your entire staff. My wife and I consider the Hyatt Regency Newport as our favorite hotel for a weekend getaway. We can't wait to return as soon as possible and you and your staff are the reasons why.

Sincerely,

Kenny and Lorraine Hicks
Coventry, CT

“Beautiful waterfront location, great amenities and guest services”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

A group of us were here for a weekend event which happened to coincide with Valentine's Day activities. The room had a great water view, facing downtown Newport. The bathroom was a bit on the small side and had no venting so it was difficult for two people to be in there at the same time. The gym is decent with a few tread mills, ellipticals, bikes as well as some weight equipment. The shuttle van that takes you to Bowen's Wharf is another nice service as parking can be limited downtown, especially in the summer.

There was a schedule of activities for Valentine's Day including a mixology class, a scavenger hunt, chocolate fountain, yoga classes as well as guess the hearts in the jar for free night stay. Danielle, the activities director, along with Dave, the mixologist, got the guests involved with the activities as they were well attended. All the staff we encountered were cordial.

“Beware of $30 per day "resort fee"”

We were not told of this before booking on priceline. This has added an extra $60!!! to our stay. This is bait and switch advertising as well as poor business practice. You get water, parking the gym and shuttle for $60. What a crock!

Dear TripAdvisor Guest:

Thank you for your recent posting on TripAdvisor regarding your stay at the Hyatt Regency Newport Hotel & Spa.

To explain our Resort Fee, whenever a guest books through a third party (in your case Priceline), they must initial that additional charges may apply. These charges (Resort Fee) includes parking, internet services, shuttle service to and from downtown, complimentary bottled water, newspapers, unlimited local phone calls and 24 hour access to our fitness center. We also offer numerous activities for adults and children as part of this Resort Fee.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with details about your visit and I hope I have addressed your concerns.

“Need To Go Back Here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Accomodations were great, front desk a bit overwhelmed due to some weddings staying at the hotel. Fantastic location, with shuttle to downtown - very convenient. Prices included a "resort fee" which was a waste if you wanted to go off hotel property.

Room Tip: Nearly all the rooms have a great view, however the best will look northwest so you can see the suns...
