“On the decline, was it better before?”

What a disappointing experience in this run down place. Although we were upgraded to a "better" room, the cleanliness and bed were disappointing.
There was a dirty duvet under the sheets, the yakuzi was worn and dirty and the room smelled musty.
Although we were promised and had paid for a full Amrican breakfast, we had to help ourselves from the refrigerator, the breakfast room was more like a passage way with no room for the guests.
The few breakfast cereals were no compensation for a full American breakfast.
The travel agency that had booked the room for us, Nato (North Atlantic Tourist organization) refused to contact us and reimburse us for another faulty booking that had happened before.
On leaving there was nobody there to say good bye!

“Restful place, but service and cleanliness could be improved”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2009

Our room (The Generals Room) was nice and cosy, well set up and very much as expected. However the room for our daughter next door was not clean (cobwebs in the corners) and ants on her bed. That put her off.
The location is optimal.
Breakfast was not served at the inn but across the street. Evidently the owners have 4 inns in close proximity. All the other guests from the other inns also came to the same breakfast room with the consequence that they had to wait (only 4 tables in the room). This didn’t bother us as we were the early birds.

“Historic and Ghostly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2009

My husband and I DID NOT stay in this inn; however, no one is mentioning this little tip about the inn, so I will. We took the walking Ghost Tour through town (offered nightly-gives a lot of historic, interesting and fun info, a MUST DO) and the Admiral Farragut Inn is on the tour. Apparently, the Admiral's ghost has appeared to the staff in full military uniform from time to time. Also, this is a historic building--a few hundred years old with many original features--if that appeals to folks. Sorry to readers--I couldn't post my comment without rating the inn, so I gave everything average marks.

“Not what was promised”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2008

I contacted the hotel directly to make sure of space, stairs, assistance with luggage etc. There is no assistance with luggage unless you walk to another building to request it. The furniture has water stains and a handle missing from the dresser. The handle pulled off the shower and stayed that way for 4 days. There was one tiny bottle of shampoo, never replaced, the soap was a tiny tiny cake. We went to the drugstore and got our own. There is no telephone in the room so you have to physically go out and up a set of stairs to another building to get assistance. When you do, you are treated as though it is an inconvenience. I was told there was an ironing board,it never materialized. Also was told there was internet. The signal is so weak that you can't do any work with it. Was told, well I'll have to get my IT guy to look at it. The bathroom is very small. When you open the door,it wrinkles the bath mat when it is down. Grout in the bathroom is discolored. Breakfast is very common. Cook was friendly. Mattress was firm. Would not stay here nor recommend it .

  • Liked — mattress was firm
  • Disliked — physical appearance, not sure about the cleanliness, it was just old and in disrepair

“Historic central location and full of charm - we enjoyed it.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2008

My wife and I stayed here for 4 days, so we could explore the sights of Newport.
The location is excellent, being in the historic quarter of Newport, so most sights and amenities are within easy walking distance.
The actual building is a joy, being built in the colonial style, in circa 1705, (from memory). It is one of many such buildings in Clarke Street, which makes for a delightful streetscape - incorporating gas street lighting!
Given the central location, the on-site car parking is invaluable.
We upgraded our room after the first night, to one with a magnificent period-style king size bed, which was beautifully comfortable. The room itself was large and airy and well furnished.
After a hard day's sightseeing, we really appreciated being able to relax in the enormous jaccuzzi bath in the en suite bathroom.
The accommodation was clean and the staff both friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was slightly disorganised at times but very tasty.
We really enjoyed our stay and would love to return.

  • Liked — Historic building in charming location. Also very comfortable large bed
  • Disliked — Breakfast service
