We just spent a week at Newport Bay Club & Hotel and feel previous reviews are very fair. The place is NOT a hotel per se, it is a timeshare property. It doesn't really have much of a lobby, but the front desk/office is staffed 24/7. Breakfast is a bit sparse. We preferred to go to the first floor retail area and get bagles/eggles/coffee, etc from the nice lady at Espresso Yourself (she's a dog lover/rescuer like myself, so how could I resist supporting her?). There is daily housekeeping(beds made, clean towels), but other than that it is basically self-catering, as they'd say in the UK. Paper towels may or may not be in your unit, coffee isn't supplied, but there is a pot with filters. The Rhino Club in the basement will deliver food to your room.
THINGS TO NOTE: #1 There IS a "club"/bar/eatery in the basement. When it has bands playing it can indeed get loud, so stay on the 3rd or 4th floor. Even numbered rooms will be the furthest from the NE side entrance. #2 4th floor rooms are 2 levels. MOST of the 1 bedroom units have a spiral staircase up to the bedroom. Not easy when toting luggage Two bedroom units have a regular "switchback" type staircase. #3 if going when the weather is warm the even numbered rooms are on the SW side of the building and get lots of sun. We were quite happy with our odd numbered room (411) on the NE side. #4 Queen beds only, no kings that I'm aware. #5 The lower numbered rooms on each floor are closest to the busy road; ask to be away from that end. #6 This is a converted warehouse from the 1800's. Only one elevator installed. During high season the friends we stayed with (who do own a unit) said there is often a wait. There are always the stairs, which, BTW we never saw firedoors propped open as one reviewer had noted.
Bed linens very nice. Super heavy, cozy duvet and double sheeting. Bedrooms small, but plenty of storage with small closet, dresser and nightstand. No TV or telephone in bedrooms, only in the living room area. Bathrooms and kitchens new with small ref, dishwasher, granite countertops. BIG showers. Not much vanity space in the bathroom, but there are a couple of small shelves and the cabinet under the sink. There is a blow dryer, iron and ironing board. Even a small container of cotton balls and Q-tips. Kitchen rather sparsely equipped as far as cutlery, etc goes. No ice makers in the frig. Machines down the hall on 3-4th floors I think. There is a coin laundry available on-site. We had -no- problems with noise from neighboring rooms. Only bothersome street noise came from firetrucks each morning (responding to emergency or going to breakfast? : - )
Location is GREAT. Right a the intersection of Thames, America's Cup and Memorial. EASY walk to lots of places to eat, drink, shop, see. Easy access to the trolley bus to Bellevue Ave to see the cottages. If you're a walker, you can even walk to Bellevue and the Cliff Walk. All-in-all, when we go to Newport again, we won't hesitate to stay here again and would certainly recommend to friends/family.
Room Tip: Go for 4th floor, higher numbered room to avoid club and street noise. Choose even numbered rooms f...
