“We loved Rhode Island and will be back, but staying elsewhere!”

After reading the TA reviews we were somewhat hesitant in booking our stay at this hotel, but did anyway as we thought it best to be at the location of the wedding instead of arriving late and missing the ceremony . What also factored into this decision was that OceanCliff is listed as TheKnot's 2011 Choice for weddings!

Well, in our humble opinion: The TA reviews were pretty accurate and The Knot folks should probably have someone from their camp stay at this hotel before handing out awards (we cannot believe otherwise)...unless the award is based only on the locale for awesome wedding pics?

We arrived a little early, so it wasn't a surprise when we were told the room wasn't ready, we drove around Newport checking out the mansions etc and came back for the correct check-in time; again we were told the room still wasn't ready. We left again and on our third try (about 2 hrs later) it was ready - a unique experience.

The room on arrival appeared to be clean, however, we discovered horrid stains on both armchairs! Our white bedcovers were also soiled somewhat, the pillows smelled and there was a bug in one of the pillow covers (which is forgivable). We would 'like' to think of ourselves as low-maintenance New Yorkers - but for the price of the room/night..we expected better. In the evening when we inquired about food options from the front desk, we were told there wasn't anything available - as none of the restaurants were open - another unique experience! We dined out and it was wonderful.

We ate and spent the remainder of our time (Day & 1/2) elsewhere, except for the wedding event.

Suggestion: If you are attending a wedding at this hotel - stay elsewhere but keep in mind the afternoon traffic.

“Safari Restaurant at Oceancliff Resort- Avoid at all costs!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2011

Six of us went to Sunday brunch at the Safari Room, which has a great view and casual ambience. The food, however, is a different story. Most of us ordered egg dishes, which unfortunately had the consistency of hockey pucks, accompanied by burned, blackened toast. The only high point were the Blood Mary's! They were outstanding and necessary if you choose to dine here. All of our dishes arrived at different times, with one person served only when everyone else had finished. When we complained to the waitress (who was very sweet), she offered to get us new meals but we had waited so long by then that we didn't dare chance it, as we all had time constraints. No adjustment was made to our bill despite the appalling food, and my complaint letter to the management was never answered. I don't usually write negative reviews but I felt that this was one of my all time worse dining experiences and if I can spare someone else the same experience, I would want to do so.

“Don't mix up Oceancliff Resort and Oceancliff Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2010

Oceancliff Resort and the Oceancliff Hotel are owned and operated by two different companies. My daughter was married at the Hotel and everything was top notch. The staff went out of their way to make everyone comfortable. The food and service was out of this world. Unfortunately, since it is a historical site, it hasn't been upgraded to accomodate individuals who are physically challenged. A guest, who is wheelchair bound, had to be taken all around the building to gain access. Even the ramps inside the building are not on the right incline and should be treaded for safety. Otherwise, the entire wedding experience was like a fairytale come true, especially during the ceremony when the sun was just setting in the background. The arch shaped windows picked up colors of pink, orange, yellow and purple. It looked like a backdrop on a movie stage, but it was all produced by the powers of nature. Thanks to Rachel and Kim for all of their assistance and for treating all of us with kindness and understanding.

“Elegant, historic hotel with the most attentive staff you could ask for.”

Our family and friends stayed at the Oceancliff Hotel last weekend for our son's wedding, which took place there. The entire experience could not have been improved upon. It is an historic building, elegant, understated, and a very warm, and inviting atmosphere. Their staff is exceptional, in terms of their attentiveness, knowledge, responsiveness and communication abilities. For the past year we have been in contact with various members of the staff, from the wedding consultants, to the catering managers and reservations department and they could not have been more professional and pleasant to deal with. My daughter-in-law, the bride, told me that, despite the fact that there were weddings booked on Friday night, Saturday afternoon and Saturday night, she was made to feel that her wedding on Sunday evening was the only one that mattered. We had great confidence in their expertise and were never disappointed. The location, the ambiance, the food and the service were superb. The "icing on the cake " was a glorious sunset that formed the backdrop for the ceremony that took place in the ballroom, overlooking Narragansett Bay. Perfection!!

I am a seasoned traveller. This facility was absolutely fine. Staff was accommodating, food good, and my room (despite view of the AC unit) was good. A very relaxing place with some history. I recommend it for business or pleasure or small conferences.
