My wife and I found Castle Hill while we were in Newport searching for a place to have our wedding. When we saw the grounds for the first time, we canceled the rest of our site visits. We visited a handful of times over the next year during the planning and stayed in multiple rooms around the property including the inn. The rooms vary widely in space and feel and as one should expect, the pricier rooms offered the best ROI. But, with that said, our first stay was in the most modestly priced room available and we still loved it. The bathroom was small and the view from that room was not desirable, but it was clean and well kept and, quite frankly, if your there to hang out in the room, you're missing the point. And, by the way, if you do like a good view, just walk out the front door or go into the 360 degree view dining room. Possibly one of the best views in New England...if not the country.
Anyway, we did get married there, we've been back nearly every year since and, rain or shine, not only have we never been disappointed, we joke that we'd like to live there.
We travel quite a bit. We've stayed in 5 star hotels all over the world. Castle Hill is possibly our favorite spot. It's certainly not cheap, it doesn't have typical resort amenities, and it's not clad in marble and gold. But, to put it simply, it doesn't need any of that stuff. Other places need that stuff. You can't replicate the natural charm that makes Castle Hill unique. If you get there and disagree, then you're looking for a different experience altogether. In fact, you're probably in the wrong state.
If you're only going to be there once, stay in one of the beach cottages. The views are stunning and the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks and the beach puts you right to sleep at night.
Make sure you do at least one breakfast in the dining room and at least one dinner there as well. The food is outstanding. I saw a couple of bad reviews regarding the restaurant...don't let those dissuade you. It's a world class dining experience. All restaurants, even the über nice ones have the occasional bad dish, but I've never had one there in at least a dozen opportunities, so it's probably a safe bet. Again, not cheap, but great.
Bring a good book with you to read in one if the adirondack chairs on the back lawn where you can also watch sailboats and fisherman going in and out of Narraganset Bay. If you go in the fall, which I highly recommend, bring a heavy sweater and grab some tea in the afternoon in the inn...also a good spot to read and relax.
Enjoy.
