We had planned a trip to one of the more high profile U.S. cities, Boston, Philly, Chicago, or NYC. to observe a milestone birthday.
We decided to travel closer to home, and meet up with more friends at a Bill's game, and elected go top end on the hotel.
This hotel is not top end.
This hotel is heaven sent.
From the time we pulled into the driveway, our Butler, Brendan, was there to help with the bags.
Brendan offered us a welcome beverage, (red wine for me, cold beer for my spouse and the other couple), and gave us a tour of this grand mansion.
Later, he valeted our two cars into the secure lot across the street.
Once into our rooms, which were lovely, comfortable, CLEAN and impeccably presented, we were invited back down to the main salon for the cocktail hour. Guests enjoy two free cocktails, and then there is an "honor bar", where you essentially charge any other drinks you enjoy to your room.
We stayed in room 405. It had a view of Delaware, and was more than adequate for my husband and I. The bath was huge, and I made good use of the 6 foot jet tub on the first night, being careful to follow their instructions...step 1: Get a glass of wine....
The bed was very comfortable, the bedding fresh and soft, and a nice surprise were the towels in the bath. Typically, hotel towels are laundered in such hot water that they are more crisp than luxurious or soft. These were lovely.
There was also a robe for each of us in the closet, had we have forgotten our own.
We then enjoyed a fantastic dinner at Tempo, (our Butler made the recommendations, and the reservations, too)....GREAT CALL!
(See my review at their Trip Advisor site).
The continental breakfast the next morning was a lovely spread, with sweet and savory pastries, roasted root vegetables, some smoked trout, breads, boiled eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt, nuts, cereals, and the best coffee I have had in ages.
The lovely concierge arranged a cab for us to get to the stadium, and recommended several ways to get back, one of which was that we take the shuttle from the stadium to the train, and then the train downtown. They would come get us from the station upon arrival. (We took a cab both ways, so it was not a concern = $45. each way, in case you are wondering).
When we got back, we had our cocktails in the main salon in front of a fireplace, and then proceeded over to Allen Street, to Gabriel's Gate for some wicked wings.
They drove us over and dropped us off, and told us to call when we were ready to return, but we opted to walk. It was raining, and they had umbrellas at the front door ready for us to borrow.
A nice additional touch/surprise was the turn down service, which offers tea light candles and fresh baked cookies that melt in your mouth.
Heaven.
The thing about this place that a guest must remember is, that eventually, you have to go home.
Which, of course, you don't want to do.
Ever.
Gino and his staff are consumate professionals, and they know how to make you feel like you are the only resident enjoying their wonderful establishment.
The hotel has all of the architectural elements of the era, yet has been upgraded with loving care. It is formal and grand, and yet inviting and cosy.
Pictures do not do it justice...!
We will most definitely return to enjoy another stay with Gino and his fantastic staff!
Thank you for a wonderful stay!!
