“Beautiful Mountain Scenery with Cleanliness and Friendliness”

It was just nice and safe and clean which is important when camping with young children. However, it was still an outdoor experience. I loved the convenient general store and even the proximity to gas and needs in town. Flagstaff KOA offers daily meals and activities which again helps when you have children. We are returning this summer with our pop up camper, but we are also renting two cabins for our friends and family to meet us there. I wish I could stay in the teepees!

“I'll pass next time”

I planned a weekend trip to Phoenix with my six year old daughter. We have a Lance truck camper. I made the reservations online the week before.

When I arrived at the KOA, there was no place to park while going inside to register. The entry is poorly designed as both the entry and the exit which makes for complete RV gridlock with big 5th wheels trying to get in and out and no place to park while registering.

I signed in and the the staff assigned my space. When I got to the space it was occupied. They put me in another space, and later when I checked out they had me in yet another space. Their reservation system is obviously broken.

Each site does not have it's own electricity. For the sites on my row, every other one had a power pole. I had site 114. One night I plugged into one neighbor on one side, and the other night the other. I used the camper's 30' power cable with no extension. That's how close the sites are.

It was 81 degrees outside, and ~ 90 inside the camper so I started the A/C and later the power went out. I went outside, and the outage was pervasive in my section of the camp. I went to the office to tell them and they told me not to run the Air conditioner because it would blow the circuit. The site says that it is a : "Back-in, Water/Electric, 30/20 amp, WiFi". My air conditioner runs on less than 20 amps because I do it at home, and when I boondock it runs on a Honda EU2000i generator. In other words, it will run well on 20 amps. The campground has too many sites on a circuit. I later heard their staff commiserating about the problem which confirmed my suspicion that their electrical grid was poorly designed and overloaded.

I paid $32 a night for a crowded KOA campground, and a hot camper since I couldn't run my A/C. I'll pass next time. I recommend that you do the same.

“Finally no concrete but beauty instead!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2008

All I can say is beautiful! This campground has stunning views of the mountain it sits on, tall pine tree's and the cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen. The staff was more than friendly. They had great free wi-fi. The even filled my thermos with a fresh hot pot of coffee as I hit the road. I called and got the answering machine and normally I would just move on but there was a plesant voice that told me to "come on in there would be a place for me to call home." I figured if they went to that much trouble on the answering machine, it must be a place too call home. I will be back in the summer, if it looks this good in the fall I imagine summer is heaven! I drive a 40 foot rig towing a Jeep and had no problems. If you know ow to drive your rig those big beautiful tree's are no problem.

“Great location, nicely kept up, friendly folks”

We stayed at the Flagstaff KOA for a special vintage Volkswagen event, the first annual "High Altitude Kampout".

The campground is very nicely tended to, wooded, and shady.
It sits right at the foot of Mount Elden, and has great easy access to the Coconino National Forest and numerous trails. The facilities were very nice-- clean restrooms and showers, pleasant common sitting areas. The employees were friendly, and the office folks were helpful. Their camp store is well stocked with food, beverages and other neccessities.

They also have a "kamp korral" which was like the clubhouse for the campground, with fooseball table, and activities (perhaps just due to our event), and a concert that evening. Signs hanging near the office made me think they do have events --movies, cookouts, music---throughout the week for their guests.

We really enjoyed our time there-- very nice accomodations-- I would recommend it to any folks passing through the area. They also rent camping cabins which were all located along the rear edges of the campgropund, bordering the national forest land-- nice locations!

One caveat-- they do not have "fire pits" at each campsite, like most camgropunds do, and campfires are only allowed if you bring your own chimenea or metal fire pit.

It is walking distance to the Flagstaff Mall and several grocery stores nearby on Hwy 89. The campground though, despite its proximity to civilization, is well tucked back behind a grove of Ponderosa pines, making you feel you are off in the middle of the forest.

  • Liked — Location at the base of Mount Elden
  • Disliked — Didn't get much sleep because people were shining headlights and flashlights on our tent

“is it me? Or is this place overrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 April 2008

I don't mean to be mean but....
We camped here for one night in April in out 30ft RV. The first site had no water within reach and the elec landline was stretched to it's limit, the park was almost empty (well it was 5 below) but changing pitch was a half hour job and a lot of fuss and we still had a reverse in pitch!

No water - it was turned off at the mains and the onboard water froze but there was plenty of hot outside the shower block so it was a small hiccup.

Taxi's will not collect at the site - we know, we tried twice, but the onsite shop is well stocked, and there is the cheapest fuel of our whole 3000 mile trip just across the street.

At 70 miles from the canyon (shortest route) it is a bit cheeky calling itself Grand Canyon and a lovely as the area is, there isn't a great deal to entertain you.
We spent the next night at the canyon RV park and there really is no comparison, worse showers and toilets but a much better pitch and free shuttles everywhere, good shops and restaurants.

No hurry to return
