We are budget minded travelers and have stayed in plenty of cheap motels. I can deal with uncomfortable beds, noisy, etc.
However I had a terrifying and unacceptable experience at the Sitka Hotel. Upon the second night at the hotel, we were awakened at 1:30AM to the sound of the door opening. I jumped up and confronted an elderly couple who had been checked into the room next to us, but actually handed the key to OUR room. Yes, thats right...this hotel does not have electronic card keys, it has old-school door knobs with no dead bolt or chain. We could have been robbed, raped, or murdered by this idiot who worked at the front desk. I stormed down to the lobby to demanded to know why this happened. I swear to you the dumb kid at the desk was stoned. I have no doubt of it. He said 'sorry about that, but this happens all the time'. It seems he reached behind the desk and grabbed the wrong key and gave it to the poor couple, who were similiarly terrified. I insisted on a full refund and he could not do that until the manager returned. Well it was Friday night and the manager would not be on duty until Monday! You bet I kept calling until I got someone intelligent on the phone and I actually did get a refund of both night. Amazing, but absolutely do not stay here!! The manager kept saying it was an innocent mistake, and our room was not double booked. Sorry, but that doesn't make me feel any better. I will never again stay in a hotel without dead bolts. Don't trust your life to a stoner kid making minimum wage. Pay a few more bucks and go down to the Super 8 or Westmark.
