“Great time mediocre food”

Had a great time traveling with family over Thanksgiving weekend. Very nice rustic rooms and a beautiful setting. The food, however, left a lot to be desired. Thanksgiving buffet was a mediocre attempt at being gourmet. Dining room had trouble other two evenings our party of 8. Had to split up Friday evening at 2 separate tables in the tap room and deal with a very overwhelmed server and poor food. Saturday evening was a smorgasbord with whatever food was left over since they were closing at noon the next day for the winter. They did not even serve their famous blackberry ice cream that night. The entertainment Saturday evening was fantastic however. My 17 month old son loved "dancing" to the bluegrass band and watching the clog dancers.

“I love this place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

I've been visiting Skyland (and Big Meadows) for more than 40 years.
I appreciate the rustic mountain lodges, nightly acoustic entertainment, decent food at a reasonable price and spectacular views. Skyland is a great place to go to get away, reflect and 'recharge my batteries'.
The kids love it there also!

“End of Season...but still a great place to stay”

We had the opportunity to have a spur of the moment getaway over Thanskgiving weekend. We booked two nights at Skyland Resort. The resort closed for the season at noon on the day we departed....but the service was great right up until we left. The room is not luxurious...but the surroundings more than made up for it. We stayed in a Traditional room in the Winchester section. The view over the valley from our deck was just outstanding! We had dinner each night in the Lodge Dining room. I was quite pleased with the variety, the ample portions, and the great service. Skyland Lodge is in the heart of Shenandoah National Park, great access to lots of hiking trails, horseback riding and Park activities. We also enjoyed the free evening entertainment at Skyland a plus since our room did not have a TV or wireless access. Some rooms do have TV and wireless is available in the hotel lobby. We were fortunate to have good weather this late in the season and really enjoyed our time at Skyland.

Room Tip: Winchester section of rooms has a wonderful view of the Shenandoah Valley

“Less than great accommodations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We stayed at the Skylands resort in the National Park above Luray. The views were spectacular, the road winding and clear, but the rooms were less than great. We stayed with our pets, and the rooms were clean, but very basic. No fluff here. I believe they have newer rooms but I guess they only allow pets in the older rooms. The heat was....on and off. I could not find a thermostat, so if you left it on the room would be 80 when you come back and shut it off at night and you wake up at 3:00 am a bit cold. I guess if you are used to camping this might be luxurious, but if you are used to even a Holiday Inn, these were not as nice. However on the good side, the food was quite good and not at all what I expected. So if your a camper type, you will love it!!

Room Tip: Ask for the newer lodge buildings

“Great location and view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

We have been traveling to Skyland for over 20 years. We have gone from a family of 4, dragging 2 kids up the mountains, to trying to keep up with them, to just the 2 of us. We love the location and the view. We accept that the accommodations are at best primitive. The shower barely sprays the water they charge you nearly $5. a day for, the bathroom generally has at least one broken part--shelf, dispenser, etc, the TV gets much better reception than it used to get, but still not much, the walls are paper thin--hope you don't get a baby next door! We have continued coming because we love the view and the hikes; however, this last visit was probably our last to Skyland. We will continue to hike, but we will stay in Luray or Front Royal. What has changed our minds? Not the rooms-- The boring overpriced FOOD served by waiters who barely speak English. This year they dropped the Prime Rib--final blow. We stayed for 3 nights, but had to run into Luray for dinner the last night. We chose driving amid the deer and sharp turns over another night of that food! So, if you don't mind driving into town for dinner (breakfast at Skyland is good), the view is worth the problems.
