We booked two nights at Rio Sierra and were sorry not to be there longer. The setting is beyond idyllic nestling riverside along a swift moving rapids winding their way over and around smooth boulders. It is quiet and lovely and Mars is a wonderful and thoughtful host. If you are on your way to a hiking trip in the Sequoia National Park than this is a perfect place to stay!

This place has extremely cosy ambiance, it is almost like you have your own cottage house by the river. We found the staff of the hotel very helpful too. Some extras offered by the hotel justify the high price - fireplace by your apartment is always awaiting you in the evening, smores are offered by welcoming hosts, a lot of separate seating areas to enjoy the riverview. Distance to restaurants and the trails in the national park is fine.

Cons: (1) Breakfast offered by the hotel is merely satisfying. (2) The outer spaces ask for some tidying up, otherwise it feels like you are in a godforsaken countryhouse. (3) The sound isolation in rooms is very bad. (4) The price we paid here (240 USD/night) is the same that as for 5 star hotel on a lake shore with sauna facilities included in the price. Is it the price premium you pay for the stunning views and fireplace? Maybe, I can agree. I would return here for sure anyway.

We (family of 4 + kid) stayed at the master suite over a weekend.

Pros:
Beautiful location
Well thought out amenities - hammock, shaded places with chairs laid out throughout the property
Friendly staff
Evening fire and Smores :)

Cons:
We stayed at the master suite that was advertised as sleeping 4-6, but it had only 1 master bedroom and 1 bathroom. The bathroom offered no privacy given that the only access was through the bedroom and it had semi-transparent wall all through.
There were 3 beds in the living room area. This was not ideal for us at all given we were 4 adults and a kid. So while I wholeheartedly recommend this place to a couple or a family with 1 kid, I would not recommend it for more than 2 adults.

Let's start with what we LOVED about this place. We stayed in the Panorama Room for one night 10/03/14 for my husband's birthday.

1. Great LOCATION...it's on the river! Beautiful and relaxing. It's like your own oasis, not crowded, play at your own risk! (You sign a safety waiver).

2. Close to Sequoia National Park (which is why we stayed here and based upon fellow Yelpers). Also, our sight seeing tour guide actually picked us up from here.

3. Friendly STAFF...from the girl who checked us in (sorry we forgot her name) to Cherry, who helped us with our t.v. issue, and the guy who checked us out. We never met Mars but she seemed nice on the phone and emails. Always quick to respond to my questions...Thank you!

4. The CATS...I loved them so much!!! Wish I was able to play with them more. The orange tabby Maine coon one reminded me of my own. They are friendly and they liked to be petted.

5. Great FULL kitchen...our intentions was to cook dinner, but it was getting late and we were tired from all that hiking and sight seeing tour stuff.

So, now let's name the things we DIDN'T LIKE:

1. The SMELL...the room has a weird odor. I don't know if it's because the structure is old or the paint, but it smelled like aged wood and dust (it's hard to describe).

2. OVERPRICED...I guess I expected more from the room for what I paid for. (Maybe an air freshener, even a birthday greeting or something accommodating).

3. HARD bed...there's 2 queen beds in the Panorama room. The one on the right, when you walk in softer than the left.

4. MIRRORS...I need them! There's one in the bathroom but I need a full body one.

5. Poor LIGHTING...it's dark and there's small lamps everywhere.

6. NO SMORES!...we didn't see anyone lighting the fire-pits, and we didn't get the famous s'mores that everyone said they got.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and my hubby had a great time on the river. It was a great bday getaway.

The setting is visually stunning, glacial rocks next to a tumbling river, comfy chairs for relaxing and a nightly fire for social warmth. The river lulls you to sleep and gently wakes you in the morning. Everything was provided for one's comfort. I wish breakfast was provided as part of the package. It is pricey, but worth it. Wifi included and because AT&T appears to be the only service available, owner has provided Vonage phones for free calls anywhere in U.S.

Room tip: Request a river view room.
