“Best choice if you are on a budget”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The Sage Hotel gives great value for your travel dollar. The rooms are modest but clean and the friendly staff is a real bonus. This hotel is all about the location. It is close enough to the Plaza to walk (if you regularly walk at least 30 minutes a day for fitness). But they offer a free shuttle van that runs during daytime hours. Their free breakfast buffet gives you both the caffeine and the calories to keep going until one the many great restaurants beckons. Ask the shuttle driver to take you to the top of Canyon Road; then get out and walk down, enjoying the view and the many galleries along the way. One afternoon, drive out to the southern outskirts of town on Cerrillos Road and have lunch at the Blue Corn Café. After lunch continue on to the Santa Fe Brewery just outside of town and sample their fantastic brews.

Room Tip: Ask for a room toward the back to avoid the noise from Cerrillo Road.

“Good Location, but terrible carpet in room!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

The Sage Inn has a great location (the best feature at this budget motel), though it's still a bit of a walk to the center of all the action. We enjoyed the walk to the Plaza, but there is a shuttle you can take instead. There is a great New Mexican Restaurant across the street and toward town next to the train depot (one of the reasons we liked the location so much). The park directly across from Motel was nice for our daughter. Whole Foods next door is also convenient.

My biggest complaint about the motel is the very unpleasant carpet. It felt grimy and a bit wet at all times over our 4 days there. We had to wear shoes or socks and they were very dirty from the carpet. Normally in our hotel rooms we like to leave our shoes off. The icky carpet really bothered us. I even asked the housekeeper to vacuum everyday, which she did, but nothing made the floor seem any cleaner. We stayed in many hotels/motels/resorts over the summer and never had this issue anywhere else. The beds were low-medium quality, as were the sheets. We didn't expect a lot of luxury at this motel, so we were generally satisfied with everything in the room except for that terrible carpet. I don't like to give them a poor rating (2 stars), but because of the carpet, I don't think we'll want to stay there again. I hope they have done something about this gross carpet. (I'm sure that they are aware how gross it is.) We did love Santa Fe, and hope we can find a decent place to stay that is as reasonably priced as the Sage Inn.

One other issue we had was our next-door neighbor loudly pounding on our door and yelling for us to open around 3 AM. We were startled and a bit scared until we realized she was confused thinking she was at her own door. We explained from inside that she had the wrong room and then she went into her own room, no apology. Some people are so rude. This wasn't the fault of the motel, but we felt that the motel did tolerate other disruptive guests during our stay. For instance, an extended family was playing football in the parking lot one afternoon, around all our cars, really disturbing the peace. (who knows why they wouldn't just cross the street and go to the park! It's nerve-wracking to see kids and grown men bumping between your car and other guests' cars!) The motel mgmt only asked them to stop after we called and complained. I am thankful, though, that they did ask this group to stop.

A simple continental self-serve buffet was available every morning in the dining area. It was nice to have coffee, tea and a bite to eat (boiled eggs, bread, cereal, limited fuit, motel-style pastries). Really not a great breakfast, but something is better than nothing! The lady working there was very nice.

Our daughter liked the little pool, which was warm and very small in a fenced in area with some vegetation giving it a litttle privacy on the 1st level, but the second floor looked right down into it. We were there during the summer, so having a pool was important to us.

I had heard that the neighborhood used to be rough, but it's been improving in recent years. We saw a bit of graffiti in the nice park across the street, but otherwise we felt the area was very safe. The walk to the plaza was less than 10 minutes for us. We needed to drive to get to other areas of town to see more art galleries.

The reception area looks attractive and pleasant, the employees were nice throughout, and the location and price are really good (esp. on 3rd party site), so it's not a bad option... just not great. I don't want to sound too picky, but walking into our room and being disgusted by the carpet made it hard to really enjoy our stay there.

Room Tip: Upstairs is probably quieter than 1st floor.

Thank you for the kind words you said about our hotel. We are always striving to keep our guests happy. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest apologies with regard to your concern about the carpet here at the Santa Fe Sage Inn. Almost all of the carpets in our hotel have been replaced by brand new carpet. I am very sorry that the carpet in your room made your stay displeasing and I assure you that if we were made aware of your discomfort with your room we would have gladly moved you to another room. Since it is too late for that now, we would love to have a second chance to create a wonderful experience for your family.

“Great Value and Location”

We are big Sage Inn Fans. Hotels in Santa Fe are expensive, especially if you want to be within walking distance of the Plaza - The Sage Inn is the wonderful exception. The rooms are adequate and clean; the staff is pleasant; location is great; prices are reasonable and free parking. Besides a short walk to the Plaza, this hotel is located just down the street from the popular Railroad District which has nice shops and great restaurants.

Room Tip: We have never had a bad room after several stays.

“A gem!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

Great location, close to the heart of Santa Fe, where the attractions are. Whole foods supermarket is just next door for groceries. The chocolate place nearby sells great chile infused chocolate. It's also a hop away from the NM railroadrunner to ABQ.

Price is cheap as compared to other hotels in the heart of Santa Fe, especially with the buy 2 nights and get a third free promotion.

The interior decor has some southwestern touches and it is tastefully done.

However, staff are not very friendly.
