We booked Delmar en la Cienega the first time in September of 2007 because we wanted to hike at Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, and Delmar was very close. We had booked the following two nights in Santa Fe because we did not realize how close Delmar was to Santa Fe. After arriving at Delmar and seeing how glorious it was and realizing how easy it was to get into Santa Fe, we checked to see what the cancellation policy was on our Santa Fe motel. But we would have forfeited the cost of the first night's stay, so we left with great regret the following day.
Our next time in New Mexico was May of 2009. We flew in and out of Albuquerque, and planned to spend two weeks exploring the southern part of the state. As we mapped out the trip I kept regretting that we wouldn't be near Delmar for a repeat visit, and finally we decided to forego visiting some new parts of southern New Mexico so that we could spend two nights at Delmar. Although staying there would require extra driving that took us out of our way, we at least knew that the last two days and nights of our trip would be wonderful.
We were so glad to see Marie and Dee again. Their warmth and kindness made us feel as if we were coming home. We've stayed in B&Bs in the US, England and France, including two castles in France and two 15th-century manses in England and France, and there's nothing to compare with Delmar and Dee and Marie. The hacienda is so beautifully furnished and restored that I can imagine what it must have been like to be a grandee in old New Mexico. The indoor swimming pool is a gorgeous part of the house and we enjoyed using it at the end of each day. Breakfast is always a treat. My mouth is watering as I write this.
But most of all, Marie and Dee are the heart and soul of Delmar. On both occasions we've wished we could stay longer. I am now trying to figure out how we can include Delmar in our next trip to the Southwest, even if we don't go anywhere else in New Mexico. I envy those lucky people who have never been there and who will have the delight of discovering this jewel in the desert and the two wonderful people who watch over it.
