“Beware of Bait and Switch scam”

Be very wary of putting a deposit for a room here!

A friend and I were attending a week long photography workshop in Santa Fe and booked a room at the Dancing Ground. There was only one room suitable for two people who did not wish to share a bed and we specifically booked that room. When we arrived, we were shown a different room than the one we booked (all the rooms have names and the name was not the one we booked nor did it look like the picture on the website). The receptionist let it slip that the "manager" had been living in the room we booked and had been for several months.

We were shown other rooms, but all of the rooms available meant sharing a bed for a week and they were very dark and dingy. We decided to find a room somewhere else and I asked to be refunded my deposit of $90. The receptionist claimed she couldn't do that kind of transaction and said I'd have to "talk to the manager" (who was nowhere to be found). We left and found a room at the Marriott (which we were very happy with).

Despite numerous calls and messages to the manager and the woman who took the booking, nobody from Dancing Ground returned my calls. I took the matter up with Visa, who refunded my money. It was an enourmous time consuming hassle.

I'm glad to see that other TripAdvisor reviewers had good experiences there, but I wouldn't stay there if it were the last room available in Santa Fe.

“Avoid this place like The Plague!!!”

I booked a stay at the Dancing Ground of the Sun a week ahead of time and in-person. I was shown the room I would be staying in, and found it acceptable. I was looking forward to my stay there the following week given the close proximity to downtown Santa Fe.
When I returned to my office I found a slew of bad reviews of this B&B but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt.
On check-in day I arrived at 12:30pm. I was told they had had a full booking the night before and that the rooms would not be cleaned and ready until 4pm. I returned at 4pm and was checked in. Upon entering my room I was unpleasantly surprised to find they had not yet cleaned it. Everything was a mess.
Given the prior reviews and my own brief experience, I promptly checked out, explaining the whole affair to the receptionist, and obtaining the phone number to the oft absent manager so I could attempt to avoid being charged a cancellation fee. Thankfully another customer was in the office to hear all this.
PS
I found out when I booked this place that the owner lives in California. I suggest that woman either pay more attention to this B&B or sell it.

“Great first impressions”

We stayed in the Rain Dancer room. The appearance of the room was outstanding, everything you could ask for in southwestern decor. The difficulties weren't apparent until later.

First, we discovered that the air conditioner, which is at ceiling level, is also the room heater. It is capable of creating a stratum of warm air at ceiling level, but not throughout the room. After the sun went down, it was cold, cold, cold. The box was also remote-controlled, with a time delay, so it was difficult to tell what you were asking it to do, as well. Bottom line: not a good place to stay in cold weather.

Then we found that the thin gauze curtains were the only window coverings, and there were convenience lights on all night outdoors. So the night offered little privacy and no darkness.

Very attractive place, but disappointing in the end.

  • Liked — Walking distance to everything in Santa Fe
  • Disliked — Heater inadequate for cold weather, no privacy curtains

“Shabby, not chic - our experience exactly.”

Just got back from 4 days in one of the suites. Tired, musty (the operative word), worn furniture (not in a good way, like they hit up the local thrift store a couple years ago to furnish the suite and then painted indian motifs on them). TV barely got reception. (the drooping TV cable festooning the wall added to the ambiance). Patched wall repairs, not painted, porch lights never worked.
Young staff helpful, but not particularly empowered. Terrible smell from bathroom upon arrival. Poor air circulation made it take until the evening to dissipate. Staff couldn't do anything. Did I mention the pillow with the slight urine smell?
Photos on website misleading (certainly for our suite). Could hear every word in the room next door to us.
I get the feeling that the owners have a cash cow and just don't care (or understand) about guest amenities or the guest experience. If we hadn't paid upfront through Travelocity, we would have left.
Bottom line, did not want to spend any time in the room. We've had so many great stays at Santa Fe hotels (and we aren't luxury hotel snobs at all), this was really disappointing.
This place needs a thorough makeover and owner retraining before we'd ever consider going back.

  • Liked — Only its location.
  • Disliked — Everything.
  • Tips/Secrets — According to other reviews, the suites may widely vary, though I don't think so.

“great time”

We arrived in Santa Fe on Saturday 30th of Sept. We had booked this hotel on line sight unseen. The hotel couldn,t have been nicer. The rooms were large and comfortable. The morning breakfast was awesome according to my wife. (I don't eat breakfast) Waffles are made by each individual. Our room was right on the main street and the room was as quiet as if we were ten miles from the roads. The only negative was the staff who checked us in that night. Our friends were told that their luggage was being delivered from Albuquerque that night and the staff had no idea when or if it had arrived. When we checked with the staff later (10pm) they couldn't tell us if the luggage had arrived or not. Luckily Sunday morning we found out that it had been delivered to the downtown location and was shuttled to our hotel by 9 am. I would strongly recommend this hotel for not only the price but the location as well.
