The Old Santa Fe Inn has several high points: Sterling reception staff, excellent snacks in the lobby, a central location, and a good price for the money. It is within a few blocks of the Plaza area and Railyard District sites such as the Farmer's Market. My husband and I walked easily to the La Fonda Hotel for drinks, and to restaurants on W. Marcy Ave. We never took advantage of the included breakfast because we were always so busy trying local eateries, but it sounded very good. The lobby has a self-serve area with some of the best hot chocolate I've ever had and wonderful cookies!
When we arrived, the front desk was swamped and only staffed by a single receptionist. He was excellent, though, gracefully assisting a rather demanding guest who was in front of us, then apologizing profusely to us for the wait. We really didn't mind waiting, since the lobby is very cozy with sofas, tourist publications, and tasty snacks! The receptionist quickly checked us in and walked us over to our room. We had reserved a king room with a kiva fireplace, and were assigned to room #1. I cannot recommend the location of this particular room; it is on the street and on the bottom floor; closer to traffic than any other room in the complex. Although the traffic noise wasn't terrible--Galisteo is not very busy compared to what we are used to--the room did not offer a feeling of seclusion and we didn't particularly want to linger there although the room itself was nice, with a good, plush bed. Try to get a second floor room if you can; we had a family with small children above us, and the kids liked to wake up at 6am and make a racket; it sounded like an ongoing stampede right above us. Also, for the next trip to Santa Fe, I am going to try to get a hotel room somewhere with a wood burning fireplace; the "kiva" in this particular room was actually an ordinary fireplace and although the gas format is probably more environmentally responsible, I didn't think it was worth the extra money; it produced heat but seemed more like having a video of a fire rather than a real hearth.
I think with a different room, though, the experience would have been better, and I cannot recommend the staff member enough--I feel awful because I cannot recall his name, but he is a serious asset to the business, once of the best. most welcoming front desk staff I have ever met.
Room Tip: Avoid room 1, try to get an upper floor room toward the back of the lot.
