We spent 3 days at the Motel 6 which we chose for price, location and the level of quality/comfort we expect from the chain.
The rooms, as expected, were nothing fancy. The beds were good although there was an obvious hole in one of the blankets. In our first room the AC did not work, just the fan, and the door was very hard to close, so we moved to the room below. In the 2nd room one table lamp did not work but we only reported it after we left.
I was quite disappointed to see that the pool was closed. One of the reception staff told me it had been closed all summer.
What really makes me hesitant about returning is the filth of the carpet. I usually wear shoes in a hotel room but the last day I did some physical therapy that works better with bare feet. I had showered just before. About 20 mins. later I was on the bed reading and my husband asked, "Why are your feet dirty?" Well, it was the carpet! I had not gone outside. I washed my feet and made sure to wear shoes in the room the rest of the evening.
We did report this to the front staff when we left the next morning. They were very apologetic and promised to get the carpet shampooed. The dirt was not visible and the cleaning staff did vacuum every day so it seemed that the carpets were just not shampooed often enough. It was really pretty disgusting.
The only other problems were the parking and the location of the AC.
We have a van and it is really hard to get into a space when the lot has mostly filled up. There is an odd arrangement in the parking lot with 2 longish spaces perpendicular to the regular parking spaces. The distance between the longer spaces and the regular spaces is not wide enough. We got trapped in our space by a customer's disabled truck that was parked lengthways behind us in one of the perpendicular spaces. If you are just driving a compact, you'll be OK.
RE the AC, it is directly next to one bed and on the opposite side of the room from the second bed (we had a room with 2 queen sized beds). Whoever sleeps next to the AC unit needs to use 2 blankets if the room gets cold enough to make the area by the other bed comfortable. We have stayed in other hotel rooms with a similar set up but this one seemed to cause more discomfort. On high, the AC did cool the room down just fine.
Basically, I expected a bit more for the money, even though it is a budget motel. We usually do stay in budget motels and I expect a cleanliness, facilities in good working shape, a good bed, fairly quiet room and a helpful staff.
The bed was good, the front desk and cleaning staff very nice, the room was quiet. You certainly can't' beat the location - near downtown, right by Site Santa Fe and the Railyard, a short walk to Whole Foods.
Until the incident with the carpet, I had pretty much decided that I would stay here again if I came by myself in my little compact vehicle (being alone also solving the room AC problem - I'd just crank 'er up and sleep in the far bed). I would also spend more time checking the room before I unpacked (lights, AC, door lock, TV, sink, comode, shower, etc.) Post-carpet, I think I'll try elsewhere.
