“Be Warned”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I attended a workshop here this past July. From the start there were problems that I observed with other guests and continued to be true for our group.

The wedding party I observed was having problems in every area of this 'resort'...from food to seating for the wedding to lodging of their guests.

Here are some of the problems our group encountered ...

Our reservation was screwed up-the dates, type of room and rate. I have to say that Sherrie worked very hard to correct the problems but it would have been nice not to have to deal with it. (as a note: we continued to have problems with being double charged, etc. 2 months after we left.)

The organizers of our workshop prepaid for food (this resort is not close to anything) and the 'chef' decided that he had worked too many days in a row and closed the kitchen leaving us with NO FOOD :{

One of our group in a casita encountered a waterfall in their closet in the middle of the night when the ceiling gave way during a rain storm.

Enough said?

This resort has such potential but DO NOT STAY HERE until it is under new ownership.

“A Christmas Disappointment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

We were quite disappointed by our two day stay at Sunrise Springs. We arrived at 3:30 pm on Christmas day and were told the restaurant - the only place nearby to eat - was closing at 4 pm. When we had made our reservations, we had been told the restaurant was closing 'early' at 6:30. It seemed that the staff left for the holidays shortly after we arrived. Breakfast next morning was in the library and we had been told to help ourselves to the well-stocked refrigerator - plenty of milk, juice and bread and eggs. But we had to search around to find someone to get coffee (appeared to be the housekeeping staff) and the cereal and some other items ran out our first morning and weren't replenished the next morning. A very loud window heating unit clatttered away in a common area in our nearly empty building, with a sign on it saying not to turn it off. The rooms themselves were nicely appointed, and under normal circumstances, Sunrise Springs might not be a bad place to stay, if you want to be 20 minutes outside Santa Fe. However, our experience in a nearly vacant resort was a little odd and I doubt if we would consider a return visit.

“Late winter escape”

Our honeymoon was delayed by a few weeks while we got on with the business of business and then we had a weekend off! Quickly we searched for spa locations in Santa Fe and discovered the off season rates at Sunrise Springs. We had the place nearly to ourselves. Check in was a bit awkward, it was tricky getting someone to check us in. After that it was heavenly. We wandered the grounds exploring, enjoyed the hot tub, luxuriated in the room amenities and dined at the Blue Heron Restaurant...ooh, la, la. I'd do it again in a heart beat.

“Lacking in almost every way”

Stayed 2 nights & 3 days in a Casita. They allowed us early check-in and the Casita was relatively clean. However, the whole resort was rather rundown and shabby. Landscaping lights were burned out, paint peeling on buildings, very few staff members. The website promised luxury amenities with full spa services. The mattress was old with springs poking us. The sheets were actually see through. It took us 2 days to extra pillows and the gate never did get fixed. No full service spa was on the property. Massage & facials were the only services available. There were only 4 TV channels available, none of which were local. The advertised continental breafast consisted of cold boiled eggs, cereal, toast & coffee. No milk or creamer were available. All in all, we would not recommend this facility to anyone. If we had had a choice, we would have changed facilities immediately.

“Beautiful facility that's a treat to visit but there are always a few shortcomings due to short staffing.”

I've visited Sunrise Springs on three occasions over 10 years and my experiences have all been similar.
First, this place is magical in some regards and the facility and surrounding gardens/landscaping provide a beautiful and relaxing place to unwind and spend some quality time by yourself or with someone you love. Its very quiet and serene. Its also very affordable so if you are looking to get away and want a spa-type environment on a budget, this place may be for you. The facility is short staffed and maintenance is always lacking in some regard (the shower in the hot tub area is lacking hardware and doesn't work for example), but if it was maintained impeccably and staffed sufficiently, the rates would be much higher and I probably couldn't afford it.
In a nutshell, don't expect a perfect facility where staff spit polish everything and wait on you hand and foot-this is not that kind of place. I felt more like a guest in someones private facility- its very quiet and the facility is large enough that you often feel like you have the entire place to yourself. In fact, I could literally roll out my yoga mat just about anywhere on the grounds and have a nice practice with no interruption. Its that kind of place! The food is pretty good (even though the chef can sometimes double as your server) and the accommodations are very nice (it would be nice if they upgraded the bedding though).
Its always a treat to visit Sunrise Springs but when I go I usually bring extra fruit/snacks because the menu is limited. The dinner specials have always been good, too.
