We booked a room after decided at the last minute to stop in Santa Fe on our way home from Colorado. We were a little concerned as we followed the directions down the rural back road, thinking that there couldn't possibly be a luxury resort this far back off the main highway. However, once we turned in to the Sunrise Springs entrance, we were stunned to find this amazingly modern retreat!
Our room was in one of the casitas, which are private bungalows with a fenced patio area, a fireplace, a small, separate office area, two beds, and a luxury bathroom. The furnishings were well-appointed and beautifully decorated - they blended clean, modern lines with the traditional New Mexico "vibe," and we were really impressed to be staying in such a beautiful place for such an amazing price.
The grounds are beautiful as well; in addition to the Casitas, they have more traditional rooms as well. We saw a pool and there is a large, beautiful pond, a tea garden, and a full service spa on the grounds, as well as a fine dining restaurant.
Our experience with the guest relations was mixed. We arrived VERY late -- it was past 11:00 pm, but I had called ahead to let them know. The woman I spoke with told me that our key would be at the front desk, and if there was no one there at that hour, that I was to use the phone outside the lobby to call. When we arrived, there was no one there, and the phone didn't work (it sends you through an endless loop of "press 1 for operator," etc.). Apparently we had arrived between shifts, and we panicked a bit, until my hubby found an open door in the back and was able to retrieve our keys.
HOWEVER, the next morning, the man at the front desk was AMAZING... he apologized profusely for our trouble, gave us a deep discount for our next night (we liked it so much we had decided to stay over an extra night), and then, since we had no clue what to do or see in Santa Fe, he gave us an itinerary for our day and was very, very helpful.
Overall, our experience was amazing at this resort, and I HIGHLY recommend staying there.
Just make sure, if you're going to be late, that you have made arrangements with the resort to get your keys. Be explicit about what time you'll be arriving, and make sure that you'll be able to get into your room.
My wife and I were very disappointed in this property. There were several problems with our room, and like other reviewers, we had difficulty reaching anyone for assistance. The "breakfast" was a do-it-yourself proposition, and after one night (of a planned 4-night stay), we checked out and into a much nicer resort property. There are too many good options in the Santa Fe area to waste time and money here!
My boyfriend and I decided to take a long weekend vacation over Labor Day down to Santa Fe from Colorado. This was our first time to Santa Fe. We booked our reservations at Sunrise Springs using airline miles and SS was a 'reccomended' destination. Upon arriving at SS we were immediately unsure of what we were getting ourselves into. For being a holiday weekend in a fairly popular vacation destination, we expected the hotel to be bustling with other guests and staff. The hotel looked like a ghost town. When we walked into the reservation center to check in there was a note on the desk that stated 'the recpetionist was away from the desk and would be back shortly'. We waited about 10 minutes before the receptionist walked in the door and kindly greeted us, gave us our room keys, and provided us a map to where our room was located. As we drove around the grounds to find our room, it quickly reminded us as a very poorly kept and desserted camp you'd go to in the summer when you were a child. The entrance to the building where our room was was flooded with ants. Walking into our room we questioned how long we would last there. My boyfriend was very apolgetic, but I continued to say 'let's just make the best of it'. Well, it's hard to make the best of it when there are stains on the bed cover, comforter and then the sheets as well. I should also mention the sheets were a tiffanys blue color, which probably were purchased back in the 70's and probably not washed since the 70's. Additionally, the grounds of the resort are completely unkept and unmaintained. We were looking forward to spending some time by the pool/hot tub, the pool was a nightmare, and the hot tub facility appeared as though a bomb went off - there was no water, no hot tub, just a hole in place of where it looks like a hot tub used to be. The restaurant was blacked out, there was no open bar either. This place advertises itself as a 'spa' but it would be my guess that the person providing your services was also the front desk agent. It really looked like a one-man show. An hour after arriving we decided we'd stay the night since it was already late, but we'd be out first thing the next morning looking for a new hotel. We went to find the receptionist to let her know we'd be checking out early and wanted to make sure we were not charged for the latter part of our stay because this place was not what we thought it was. She immediately became defensive and lost her temper with us saying that she had no control over it and that we'd just have to talk to the manager in the morning. She took our phone number and the manager has still never called...
Bottom line - don't waste your time or money with this place.
The casita was nice and clean. However, we were not prepared for the amount of ants outside the gate. Also, the gate to the patio area was broken. The meeting room at the gallery by the Koi pond was dirty with cobwebs in corners and filthy floor. The koi pond had an oily skim on top. The grounds needed some upkeep because of overgrowth. Many times during our stay I tried to contact someone at the front desk and no one was around. Good time but could have been better.
