“Like visiting family, only better!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

My family and I chose to stay at the Juniper Lane Guest House during our annual cycling trip of San Juan island. We found the house to be welcoming, comforting and a fair value. The guest house reminded me of staying with family, you feel comfortable running to the bathroom in your socks, but are still on your best behavior! The kitchen was well stocked and easy to get around in. Views from the backyard were spectacular, especially with an early morning marine layer! The grounds offered a covered place to lock our bikes.
We stayed in the Pine Backpacker. Beds were comfortable, room was spacious and our 12 year old LOVED the three tier bunk-bed. The guest house was clean, well maintained and we’re looking forward to coming back next year.

“Wonderful place, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2010

We rented the cabin for ourselves and our two children, and it was perfect. It's very close to town but out of the way enough to be quiet, peaceful and beautiful. The cabin had everything we needed and is beautifully but simply decorated. The beds were extremely comfortable even after a four-night stay. Juniper and her cat were friendly and welcoming, too! Thanks for a great visit.

“A great place to stay with a large family for all ages”

I booked the Juniper Lane Guest House, including the cabin to house 14 of us while visiting Friday Harbor for a family reunion. We had 7 adults, 3 teenagers, and 4 kids under 7. The inn worked out better than anticipated! We cooked and ate all meals at the inn, and even made smores over the open fire in the back yard at night. The back yard was huge, and the kids had a blast playing running and playing games. One evening, we had 6 more cousins join us for a few hours, and we were all pretty loud, but Juniper, the owner, said she did not hear us at all. I was worried we were keeping her up that night.

Juniper was the perfect hostess. She made her self available if needed, but otherwise we didn't see her. She made sure we had wood for the fire, and we borrowed her hot dog sticks to cook marshmellows. The inn is a perfect place for large families. I highly recommend it. Everyone wants to stay again at the inn on the next vacation.

“Charming, modern, different”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2010

The house is beautifully designed and furnished, with lots of natural materials. Nice kitchen and common area. Back of house enjoys sweeping vista of bucolic meadows, with chairs and hammocks. No breakfast, but coffee and tea are furnished. House is on an island thoroughfare, so some traffic noise, but generally quiet from about 10 - 6.

“Quite palce.. some sewer smell and mold smell in bedrooms”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2010

We rented this guest house for our family and friends for 4th of July weekend. Let me start with positives. This is a quite place with a private backyard opening to a neighboring farm. Good place to lie down in hammock and read a book.

The owner seemed nice and welcoming. She even provided firewood for the fire pit. However just because of a cleanliness clause, she did not refund the damage/cleaning deposit of $200. We stayed at the house for 2 nights and with a large group of 15 people we did use the common area, especially the kitchen extensively. Therefore the kitchen was a bit unclean something you might expect after cooking 2-3 meals for 15 people. But this was not unclean to cost $200 deposit money.

Everytihng else unfortunately fell apart making this the worst vacation rental we have rented ever. Although looking back I should have noticed some red flags. For example: the vrbo web site http://www.vrbo.com/293818 the owner opted out of reviews. (Thanks to TripAdvisor). The owners web site too has some reviews but are older and there is no place to submit newer reviews.

Tip: If you are a couple or 2/3 person group staying at this B&B, please stay in rooms on 2nd floor. First floor rooms are really smelly.

When we entered the guesthouse it had a urine like smell in the common area and in bedrooms which we thought may be from some weird cleaning detergent. After opening the windows it got better however one of the adults who is allergic to mold got reaction in 3-4 hours. This smell was persistent and unbearable.

There was also the sewer smell in the first floor bedrooms and the common area. This smell was simply unbearable. I even woke up in middle of night because of this smell. If you ever had a blocked or unclean p-trap you will know which smell am I referring to.

Bottomline, the place is quite but a bit unclean. I cannot comment on the other reviews, however this is definitely not a place for a large family. Especially if you want to cook a meal.

The owner also follows double standards. She does not charge cleaning fee if you rent a room, however she charges a cleaning fee if you rent the entire inn. The owner will send the cleaning staff to clean up the kitchen everyday if rooms are separately rented. However the owner will not send the cleaning staff if you rent the entire Inn.

This particular guest has found a clever way to express his anger about losing his cleaning deposit after not meeting the expectations that were clearly pointed out to him via emails and the responsibility waiver signed by him. Never once did he say anything about any mold or sewer while he was here and we interacted many times.....we bent over backwards for these people, all was perfect, they were happy until I called him and told him that we were keeping the cleaning deposit and that I was very surprised at the state they left it in. A whole page could be dedicated to all of the things that they did and didn't do that was expected of them. The next day he called and tried to ask me to refund his cleaning deposit (actually, bullied me and yelled and wouldn't let me talk) and I told him that we had to hire extra help and discount the guests that were checking in that day because it took us way longer than normal to clean and we were standing firm on our policy. He then told me it smelled like sewer and mold....at the time I thought to myself that "wow he was really reaching for something there" it has never smelled like sewer or mold (it is pristinely clean and a newer building six years old) proof of that is in the other Trip Advisor posts listed......bottom line he is angry because we stood firm to our policy and he fabricated the rest out of frustration. One thing is for certain in this industry, we are vulnerable to any walk of life that can hop on the internet and find us. Thankfully this is the first time in seven seasons we have had such disrespectful guests.
