Took the Victoria Clipper up to Friday Harbor on what turned out to be the last really nice weekend of the summer in Sept. 2011. We stayed at the Earthbox which is only a 2-3 block walk to the marina. Shuttle transportation was provided upon our arrival and departure. The staff at the Earthbox were outstanding. Our room was very tastefully decorated in earth tones. There were six pillows on each bed!!! The beds were very comfortable. There was a microwave and mini fridge in our room. We had a ground floor unit, which was nice, as the weather was quite warm and we were able to bring our chairs outside to enjoy the the nice temperatures. The indoor pool looked very nice. We had planned on taking a dip but just didn't have the time. They had a large rack with many bicycles that you could check out and and use. A nice little feature to see more of the island. When we arrived I set my suitcase on the floor to change in to some shorts. It sat there until it was time to leave. Low and behold, my suitcase completely blocked from view the box fan, which I had failed to notice upon arrival. That fan would have come in handy since it was so warm out.
The town itself is cute. We spent time in every shop there. There was a nice variety of places to eat. Two things surprised me about the town. 1. The variety of foreign accents that I heard. 2. The town is very, very dog friendly. There were water dishes available to them and plastic bags to pick up after them. Lots of trash receptacles and benches to sit on. We did a whale watching tour and were fortunate enough to see J, K and L pods. AKA a Superpod when they are all together.

“Earthbox made our minibreak a real vacation”

I used a Groupon to book a 2 night stay for my partner and myself in an Earth Room in December. We were greeted at reception by pleasant staff and complimentary tea and hot chocolate. Our room was on the first floor, had two beds, and was plenty roomy for the two of us. There is also a microwave and small fridge in the room, along with the coffee maker. They provide lovely locally made lavender scented soap/shampoo/conditioner. The bed was comfortable and had so many pillows! We self-catered for most of our stay (grocery store just down the street) and when we asked for cutlery at reception we were given that as well as plates, wine glasses, cork screw, and linen napkins which was a thoughtful touch. There was almost zero noise coming from the rooms around us, we only knew there were other people around when they were talking right outside our door. The hot tub was a treat in the evenings. Overall, the little touches really added a sense of luxury to our stay, and the staff were so helpful. I will be sure to recommend this motel to anyone I know heading to San Juan Island.

Thanks to a great offer via Groupon we enjoyed two days at this excellent establishment right in the heart of beautiful Friday Harbor. The staff was friendly AND informative on a variety of subjects. Their desire to please wass only matched by the excellent and unique lavender amenities they provide in each rooms bathroom. The beds are comfortable and I wanted to take the pillows home with me. I didn't. ;-D Look for them to bath salts to their bathroom line up. While we weren't there to utilize the spa - we were glad to find a good line up of services for the more refined traveler. Finally - San Juan Island is a wonderful destination. I'm not sure I would have ended up there without the Groupon - but now that I know...I plan to head back.

“Not to my expectations”

My first choice hotel was completely booked so I had to stay in this hotel for 1 night. I was open to it since it's cheaper then the other hotel and seemed nice from the website. I was quite dissapointed. The room was so tiny, you had enough room to walk around the bed and go into the restroom. I had a first floor room and felt really closed in since I had to have my blinds closed or anyone would be able to look into the room. The bed was quite hard and my hair dryer did not work. The heater/AC unit is super loud, I usually like to sleep with the unit one for white noise but there was no way, it was litterally hurting my ears it was that loud and it didnt help that the unit is right next to the bed. One last and most important thing, there are no irons or ironing boards in the room! I had to walk accross the parking lot and into a laundry room to iron. That was way to incovenient, I mean, what hotel doesnt offer an iron in the room?

Dear Leslie,
We are so sorry we didn't meet your expectations.
Yes, some of our rooms are small, like boxes, that's actually how we came up with our name Earthbox.
I'm surprised to hear you didn't like the bed. We regularly get raving reviews about our Sealy mattresses.
The air conditioner sounds awful. I will have that checked right away. It should not hurt anybody's ear, gosh. Same goes for the hairdryer. We have irons and boards available upon request as stated in our guest directory. I wish you would have stopped by the front desk or called us, so we could have fixed the little things, moved you to another room, brought you your own iron and otherwise spoiled you like we wanted to.
Thank you for taking the time to let us know where we can improve. Please give us another chance so we can show you, small or not, how amazing we can be.
Sincerely,
Steffi Wehner

“Everything I needed and extremely pleasant.”

The staff were outstandingly friendly and helpful, the room was clean and well appointed. Even if some might consider the room small, I would much rather have a small room with nice trim that a large space with scratchy blankets. A whirlpool tub, large bathroom, and nice bed and a room that heated up quickly to keep me comfortable.

The literature about the hotel was 100% honest and upfront, bringing up what they see as their bad points before I noticed, explained them, and generally made me feel welcome and satisfied with my choice.

They are on a the main road, and I stayed in the off season, however I could imagine road noise as a possible problem for folks sensitive to it. Friday Harbor is a small town, but the tourists stay up later than I realized. It didn't bother me, I just wanted to put something negative down.
