“excellent family hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

This all-suites hotel is perfect for anyone traveling with children! The room was spacious and perfectly clean. The kitchen was stocked with dishes, silverware and even dishtowels. The bed was very comfortable and the living area had a great flat screen TV and cozy gas stove perfect for staying on the island. Breakfast was perfect, cereal, oatmeal, fresh waffles, yogurt, etc. and was open for 3 hours. The staff was so gracious and helpful, and genuinely happy to have our family (including 4 and 1 year old children) stay.

“Pick a different room if you want sleep.”

I can't comment on any other room--we only stayed in one. The biggest issue was the bed CREAKED so loud that it was impossible to sleep. Shifting slightly caused a creak loud enough to wake you up--that's not an exaggeration. The room also was a little weird with a garage sale-ish roll top desk and it was not a suite. So, I guess the other rooms may be different? But I really can't recommend this hotel unfortunately.

It was also odd because the hotel was empty, and there were lots of other rooms available. But we checked in at 11am (mind you, on a Thursday in the offseason) and were told that this was the only room available. We both found this highly unlikely unless most of the rooms had not been cleaned for a few days as the hotel was definitely deserted.

Also, the hallway is WEIRD. It is ziggzaggy and not in a good kind of way. You'll see what I mean when you go heh heh.

The location is good and the staff were nice enough, except for the fact that they picked this room and awful, awful bed to give us.

Room Tip: Do not get room 134.

I'm terribly sorry you didn't like your room. Looking at the records, your reservation was for a studio, not a suite, which explains two things: the room was not a suite by definition, and there are indeed only three of this type of room in the hotel, so it was the only one available when you checked in. THAT SAID, there is no excuse for a squeaky bed! That room will be taken out of rotation immediately and the problem corrected. Thank you so much for alerting us to this problem. I hope you will give us another try. Our guests usually sleep like babies. Happy, calm, sleeping babies.

“With just a little work...”

Lets get this out of the way right up front. The BW Friday Harbor is a pretty decent hotel. I think most of the negative reviews are coming from people that don't understand the law of supply and demand. It's an island folks! The number of hotel rooms is very limited and everything costs them more so they are going to charge more. Don't like that fact go visit Yakima.

We stayed in September for two nights. Upon arrival we were greeted by a very friendly desk clerk that quickly got us checked in and answered all of our questions. I'm not sure who designed the hotel but the hallways were a little like something you would expect from Alice in Wonderland but that just gave us a chuckle to kick off our stay.

The room was awesome. Yes the decor was dated, but it was spotlessly clean and in excellent shape. No wear, no stains, nothing to show that they had probably had the same style since the late 80's. If the success of your trip hinges on the hotel's decor being the latest trendy style of the week go somewhere else. If you want a comfortable, well equipped room to come back to after a long day of exploring all the island has to offer then you're all set. There are very few places you can get a full kitchenette suite anymore and the large refrigerator sure came in handy.

The desk agent who checked us in gave us a top notch recommendation for dinner then their shuttle van dropped us off and picked us back up when we were ready. BTW it is about as mile and a half down to the water not the 5-7 a previous reviewer claims. We could have easily made the walk down but they were correct on the fact it is uphill the whole way back and decided we would walk off dinner on level ground and then catch a ride back up the slope.

The Continental Breakfast each morning was adequate. The typical offerings for any chain hotel breakfast. Nothing special but fine to kick off your day. The second morning there was no butter knives out and not a soul in sight to refill things as needed but the hotel was pretty empty on an off season Monday. Nothing that ruined the trip for us but definetely one of the details the management should be keeping an eye on.

Overall it was a good stay. Anywhere else and the $250 per night price tag would have been way out of line but when compared to other places in town it was a very good value.

Room Tip: Either close to the office or as far away as you can get. The hallways are windy but if you get on t...

Thank you for your candor. We are always looking to improve and will take your notes into consideration. It is especially gratifying that you mention the cleanliness...yes, we are outdated! The former owners liked the 1980s! But everything is spotless and kept to super high standards. Hope to see you next summer!
