About and hour after getting into our room we getting into bed and when we pulled the comforter back there was a bed bug crawling on the sheet. So, I pulled all the sheets back, lifted up the mattress and moved the bed and sure enough there was significant evidence of bed bugs including living bugs, dead bug carcasses, and the tell tale black droppings they leave behind (I, fortunately, watched a discovery show only a week ago on bed bug infestations). We had a room with two double beds. When I check the other bed I found the same scenario. I called the front desk and after some confusion and a couple calls we packed everything up and went down to the front desk to get a room change. After getting our new room and walking into it it was quite apparent that the room was a smoking room due to the unignorable and overwhelming odor that slapped us in the face as we walked in the room. When I walked back to the front desk to ask to be moved into a non-smoking room like we had booked I was informed that this was only room left and that there was nothing more he could do, and, that I would have to wait until morning to talk with a manager. So, with no other choice we stayed in that room. We did thoroughly check the new room for bed bugs and found no evidence of them. Our first, room was on the second floor and our second room was on the first. First floor rooms are considerably louder as you can hear every footstep above you, especially if you are by the stairs as our second room was; I think perhaps the rooms are poorly insulated. In the morning the manager called us and after some discussion decided to refund the cost of our first night and agreed to move us to a non-smoking room. So, after moving a third time we finally ended up in a non-smoking room with no bed bugs. The manager did say we was going to have an exterminator come by but bed bugs are notoriously hard to get rid of. If you do chose to stay here after reading this review then take note: room #223 is the that we found bed bugs in so if you get placed in that room or adjacent to it you might want to think about requesting a new room.
We checked into this hotel for a 2 night stay while visiting San Antonio because it was within walking distance of the riverwalk, it was on the cheaper side of hotels in that area, and honestly my wife and I had stayed there for a trip to San Antonio a couple years ago and it wasn't bad, granted it was no 5 star luxury hotel but it was nice enough and clean... then. Clearly, things have changed and I won't stay there again.
Summary
Pros: Short walk to the Riverwalk. Both a bus stop and a trolley stop literally just outside the hotel. On the cheaper side of hotels in the Riverwalk area.
Cons: BED BUGS. Questionably kept-up and cleaned. Inexperienced staff at nights after the manager leaves. Overpriced for actual hotel room value.
Room Tip: If you get room #223 ask for a different one. This is the room that had bed bugs. Also, second floor...
