“A Nice Historic Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

My husband has stayed at the Menger several times and has always liked it, and this was my first stay. My husband checked in a couple days before me and I joined him for the weekend. We stayed in the older part of the hotel. The hotel has a lot of charm and history and it's fun walking around exploring. The lobby of the hotel is very pretty, and there is a beautiful garden area and pool area.

Our room was comfortable and decorated nicely, and all the linens very clean. However, I really didn't care for the bathroom. It was very hard to get a steady temperature from the sink or the shower. On our last morning, the water kept going from scalding to cold during the entire shower. The shower head was also very low, at 5'7" I had to bend down to use it. The tub was also missing its drain, there was just a hole in the porcelain where it used to be. One of my biggest issues was the filthy blinds in the bathroom. They looked like they had never been cleaned and were full of dust and dirt. The window sill, however, didn't have a speck of dust, so we had a nice place to put our toiletries.

The hotel staff was very friendly. Everyone I passed in the halls said hello and the front desk was very helpful, especially in recommending a place to get a good quality cowboy hat.

The hotel has a great location, across the street from the Alamo and a block or so from the Riverwalk.

“Enchanting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I stayed there for the first time this week. Usually I stay at the new hotels downtown because of my business. However, I decided to try the Menger and I'm glad I did. This hotel took me back to the 1940's first of all. In the lobby, music was playing from the big band era, 1940's. The room was quaint and an adjustment to my experiences; I love it. From now on I will stay there because of the nostalgia and architecture and the history. Outstanding experience.

“Gorgeous Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We did not actually stay at this hotel, other family members did and we spent some time there with them. Their room was lovely and they had a great view of the Alamo. Gorgeous lobby and friendly staff. Would love to stay here some time. Right in the heart of San Antonia. Everything within walking distance... The price they paid was very reasonable.

“A Historic and Beautiful Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

My husband and I were looking for something with a better location than the hotel we had been staying in previously. We also didn't want to spend too much money. We were thrilled to find such a good deal and be so close to downtown and to the Alamo! We loved the history in the Menger as well. Our room was very basic but comfortable. We could actually see the Alamo from our window! The only problems is that being so close to everything means that it can be a little loud at night... it wasn't a major problem, just some loud sounds from people but once I was asleep it didn't wake me up. We also enjoyed the pool area, hot tub, and beautiful gardens. We would happily return to the Menger.

“Dirty room and the roof leaked water onto our clothes”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

people found this review helpful

When we arrived a snooty gentleman said we had arrived before the check-in time but he would give us a room anyway. The elevator near our room was broken, so we had a long round-about walk. The room was the size of a closet, and we could barely get our suitcases inside. We reserved a king bed, and the room had a queen; the room had a view of a wall and a roof down below. The worst part was that the room was covered with dust and cobwebs hung on the wall. It didn’t look like anyone had cleaned it in a year. It smelled musty and had patched walls that had not been painted. I requested another room, and after several hours of waiting, and two requests, they moved us to another room. This one was larger with a view of the Alamo, but when we opened the walk-in closet, it smelled like the flamingo cage at the zoo! No kidding. But we decided not to complain again, so we stayed and held our breath when we went into the closet. The second night of our stay, San Antonio had a very hard rainstorm, and we woke to find that the roof in the closet had leaked, and dirty water had soaked our clothes (thankfully, my boots were in a box and stayed dry). The front desk was not concerned nor surprised about the leak, and only offered to take the $25 valet parking off our tab. They did not offer to help with cleaning, etc.

Room Tip: Do NOT stay in room 4098
