We stayed at The Palacio Del Rio for the third time in 3-4 years, again for a business meeting. The hotel has nearly finished a renovation which, although improves the looks and feel, is not more than that, a cosmetic overhaul with form over function. Case in point: the bathrooms, nice to look at, but the sliding door in place for both the bathroom and closet leaves always one of these spaces open. If you are sharing a room, it can be quite annoying. The modern look includes one of those annoying bowl sinks with a fixed tall faucet over it. Not handy when shaving or brushing teeth and I'm sure they didn't consult housekeeping with regards to cleaning counters with these fads. The shower head, however, is better than you'll find in most hotels.
The noise levels have not at all been addressed, you can still hear your neighbor turning the page of the newspaper and the street/riverwalk noise, including the trains at night could have been addressed by replacing the windows.
The restaurant is standard for a hotel of this caliber, nothing to write about. Business facilities are standard as well, it functions, that's it.
Although there is free WIFI, it din't work for most of us. Cellphone reception was poor to, but that may be ATT, most dropped calls.
Pro's: direct acces to the Riverwalk; every room has a bacony; improved visual impression since the renovation; empty fridge in the room for your own food/beverages.
Con's: Noise at night
Room Tip: Don't ask for high floors. There is already enough noise and a party above your head doesn't...
