“A LONG walk”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Overall the hotel was pretty nice. It had obviously been redecorated recently. The beds and pillow were VERY comfortable and seemed new. Our room was clean, although several people I was staying with had complaints (they were moved to different rooms immediately). My main complaint is just how far it is from anything on the riverwalk. It was also kind of shady walking especially early in the morning or late at night. Basically, the hotel itself was pretty nice, if you're looking for a good location, look elsewhere.

Thank you for your comments and I am glad you enjoyed your stay. As you know we are not in the heart of the Riverwalk Commerce area but on the Museum Reach area which is on the North Reach. As with with other posters we hope we are not misleading anyone with the location of the hotel. This is a beautiful addition to the Riverwalk and is a great alternative to the traditional area which can become very congested.

Thank you again

“Hit and miss”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

On the night of our arrival, there was music playing outside our room, too loud for us to sleep. When we asked the desk for help we were told they did not know how to turn it down. At midnight it stopped, only to begin at 6:30 am.
We needed extra towels (only two in the room) and we were given them the first night, next night we asked again and they never arrived.
Our third and final night, there were people in "the Cabana" that were talking and laughing very loud, at midnight I called the desk for help as the cabana was right next to my room and 1 hour later still no help. Called the desk again and was told "we have a policeman watching them." What the heck?
The staff was hit and miss, some vey helpful, others not so much! One gave my wife bad info about the trollies, if you don't know don't guess!

Room Tip: Stay on the outside, not the side toward the pool! Better yet stay some place else!

“Really enjoyed it”

I just stayed in this hotel for an entire week and found the staff extremely accommodating. My room was very clean and huge in size. I had a balcony facing the riverwalk where I could sip my coffee and wave to the riverboat travelers.

If you google map the hotel, the Riverwalk looks deserted and scary near the hotel but I have included pictures to show you what it looks like during that section of the walk.

I'll admit that walking alone on the Riverwalk was a little scary at first but as long as I did so in the day light I felt safe. Not a big deal even if you are traveling alone. Just be smart about it and walk when the sun is shining. No, you are not right in the centre of things (about a 15 minute walk away) but I didn't mind that. The moment I stepped down onto the Riverwalk, I was very pleased with how beautiful and serene it was. Remember to bring along your camera to snap photos of the beautiful trees, glass mosaics and waterfalls along the walk.

I would definitely stay at the El Trop again. Not a bad local, a good value, professional staff and welcoming atmosphere especially if you plan to stay San Antonio for an extended time.

“As Expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

I did my research, so I knew how far it was to the 'heart' of the Riverwalk and intentionally stayed off season and away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist area. I am fond of not wasting money on luxurious hotels, so this was about what I expected. Clean, friendly, not fancy and a good bargain. If you do want extras in a room, make sure you ask. Mine was small, but clean, with no view, no fridge. My only complaint was that the room had an old, musty odor to it. Presumably from the proximity to the river, but you can overcome odor with some effort and they should try.

The walk isn't bad and rather enjoyable. Off season waits for the water taxi can be long, so be prepared to hoof it or wait. The walk alone at night to the hotel was a bit disconcerting and lonely off season, so I don't recommend it. The next nights I waited for the river taxi if I was returning late.

The Tiki bar is hype. Locals are friendly. Don't rely on the restaurant to be open during off season and there isn't much else close by for food.

Room Tip: They seem to vary considerably, so make sure you ask or do your research.

Thank you for reviewing your recent stay with us, off season is a particularly good time to visit San Antonio as the city has decided to only drain the river every other year in early January so there was no interruption in barge service this year and the attractions are less crowded.

I appreciate your feedback as it is important for us to continue to improve and provide our guests with an excellent stay.

“Great service and care”

I would like to thank Geri for all her help. We were visiting San Antonio for a wedding when diaster almost struck. With great care she managed to help us out and make our stay one of the best memories we have. The rooms were clean, the staff very friendly and the food was good. Every company should have someone like Geri as an associate. Thank you again for saving the day!
