I chose Hotel Indigo for the value (under $85 in January), and it was within 7 blocks of the more expensive Hyatt Regency where I was attending a conference. That’s a walk of less than 10 minutes, via Navarro Street, or 20 minutes via Riverwalk. A woman travelling alone might be uncomfortable walking either route in the dark (early morning or late evening), but not at other times of day.
Parking was convenient: a surface lot directly across the street, no attendant, $13/day, in-out privileges, on a two-way street. Additional spaces were down the alley in the Central Parking lot, and identified on the card the hotel provided for display on our dashboard. During our 5-day stay, we always found a space in the closest lot.
Although the top tourist attractions (especially Riverwalk and the Alamo) are within walking distance, the drive to other destinations is particularly easy from here: Pearl Brewery (a foodie complex, where “Top Chef Texas” filmed), the Japanese Tea Garden at Brackenridge Park (open until 8:00 pm; tea room open until 4:00 pm), King William Historic District (get breakfast or lunch at the Guenther House), Botanical Gardens (plan lunch at the Carriage House at the entrance), and Central Market (OK, it’s a grocery store on Broadway in Alamo Heights, but for a great wine and beer selection and alternatives to Tex-Mex cuisine, this is the go-to place).
The hotel’s restaurant has grab-and-go breakfast food (generous fruit cups, yogurt, yogurt parfaits, muffins, juices) as well as a menu. It’s definitely more than a “breakfast room,” but has the feel of a high-end snack bar. We didn’t try the dinner menu. During our stay, the bar was not open in the afternoons, but did open each evening. We enjoyed the very-nearby Ocho Lounge in the Hotel Havana – leave Hotel Indigo through the pool, cross Richmond Street and cut through Hotel Havana’s parking lot. Ocho’s menu isn’t large but the food was among the best we had while in town.
Our room was clean upon check-in, and staff was responsive to all our requests. Every day brought a new request: (1.) A guest services binder? Not available. (2.) Shampoo, since Housekeeping left none. (3.) Coffee K-cups, not replenished by Housekeeping. (4.) New key cards, since ours wouldn’t work. (5.) Clean the room, please, it’s 2:30 pm. Little issues were addressed promptly, but such assistance isn’t usually required in other hotels.
The room itself (“king bed guest room”) was large, with a bar sink and fridge, no microwave. Room temperature is controlled at a unit below the window, and during our stay (outdoor temperature swings beyond the ordinary) we tested every setting. All worked well. The bathroom had a tall shower, rainfall shower head; no tub. Hot water was plentiful.
The building’s floor plan is a bit irregular. Many balcony rooms do face directly on Riverwalk, but as some reviewers have mentioned, not all may. Finding the ice machine required a call to the front desk. (We found the Coke machine, but a second vending area on our floor had soft drinks and ice.)
Noise in general was not an issue in our third floor, street-side room. Demolition activity across the Riverwalk caused a great deal of daytime noise for rooms facing Riverwalk, and those of us hanging out on the hotel’s very pleasant patio.
Attractive, modern décor contributed to a pleasant stay. First floor common areas were well maintained. Upper floor hallways showed a little wear-n-tear: scratched wallpaper corners, minor carpet stains. Don’t plan to do laps in the pool – it’s not large.
Room Tip: Street-side balcony rooms offer more private outdoor space, and face the hotel's entrance courty...
