“secluded campground”

If you're looking for a beautiful, secluded campgrounds in Maine: we highly recommend Southbay. Jack, the owner, is helpful and friendly and relaxed about checkout times and all of those sorts of things.. The RV and tent sites near the road and office seemed good. But, Jack has lovingly developed a loop of beautiful sites on a peninsula, without affect the beautiy of the land. each site over-lookis a tidal bay. These sites and the shower-bathroom house are clean and well-maintained. most sites are flanked by woods: very private. There are wild birds: a bald eagle flew over site. Water and electricity go to most, but check before opeing your tent. . There’s a bumpy 0.2-0.3 mile road to these sites… and it is perhaps not suited for large trailers or campers. we were happy to be away from the RVs. Call ahead to ask about trailer access to these remote sites. Hiking, shorelines, and tourist sites in the area are splendid and rival Acadia. So for relaxing camping away from the crowds and expensive restaurants and boutiques; Southbay is the place.

“Some campground concerns.....”

We recently stayed at South Bay Campground. It met our needs (a place to camp), but seemed a bit neglected. The bathhouses were dirty and smelly and the playground and pool area could use some upkeep. The owner was friendly but the office could also use some cleaning up....especially since that is a person's first impression of the campground. We had a good time visiting the beaches in the Machiasport and Eastport areas...looking for sea glass and treasures. Also people were friendly.

“Best Kept Secret”

Too bad web info on this campground is so hard to find- it is one of the best places I have ever camped at. Large private sites, almost all with views of the pristeen Cobscook Bay. It is a kayakers dream. Seemingly endless protected estuarian water to paddle with NO development. In about 15 hours of kayaking I saw a total of 3 other kayakers anjd maybe 4 boats (all in the far distance). The seals follow your boat and the eagles ride the thermals above your head. Lubec is freindly and undiscovered and original downeast. Hiking is spectacular nearby as is fishing and wildlife spotting. We saw whales from shore and from boat, caught cod, clamed and visited nearby Campabello Island (also way cool).

“Camping without the Blackflies”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2003

SouthBay Campgrounds is on topr of the rest and absolutely the best. Good old-fashioned hopitality with tent sites that make you wonder if anyone else is around. Cabins in the moonlight. The Rv's are stationed at the entrance, before the inground pool, and shower area. The sites are large and comfortable. Overlooking the bay from the bluff offers a spectacular view of the tides during daytime hours. Privacy without the black flies so prevalent throughout upper maine. Hearing the dew drops and not the talk of neighbors during the evening hours, the footsteps of moose who wander the area, and just the tranquility of the night makes this the utmost destination for those who want to experience camping the way it used to be. Restaurants and other amenities are just minutes away. This will be my 4th trip out to Lubec in as many years. Southbay Campgrounds always finds a place in my passing from Bar Harbour with the fancy hotels and Acaidia Park to the B&B's thoughout the Downeast Area. Watching the sun rise from the bluff is an exhilirating experience that gives me the pleasure of knowing what it means to be alive in one of the last great areas of pure and simple relaxation.
