“noisy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2011

The room was perfectly comfortable, but the office was not well-staffed for my arrival; the elevator is shared with (perfectly polite) undergrads staying in the dorm on the lower floors; and the whole building is exceedingly noisy -- not so good if you have to wake up early. not easy to find a quick breakfast early either unless you know Providence.

“Exceeded expectations”

I read some of the other reviews before booking this hotel, and they made me a little nervous. However, since we were in town to visit Brown University, it just made sense to stay on campus. We were really glad we did. The room was beautiful and spacious. Mattresses were a little hard, but ok. All standard amenities were there, plus a fridge. Wi-Fi worked well. What really made it great were the staff at the desk. Chris welcomed us and was so friendly, going out of her way to help answer questions and checking on us each time she saw us. The other ladies were also pleasant. You can take a card that allows you to eat in the faculty dining areas, if that interests you. The location is great for walking around Providence too. It really gave us a sense of what it would be like to live at Brown. We would definitely stay there again.

“Comfortable idealized Brown dorm rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 April 2008

We stayed for a week during December and enjoyed the campus proximity and livelystudent life all around us. The room was comfortable, had armoire with cable TV, free wireless broadband internet (and a free computer station down the hall if you didn't bring yours) and a simple continental breakfast of pastries and decent coffee and juice in a quiet lounge. The receptionists were obviously students and eclectic in conversation and interests, a good resource for visitors. Thayer Street, the main commercial drag for Brown, is right up the street for all kinds of cuisine and student-oriented shops and is hopping until late. Parking is offered in a lot a block away, useful in a crowded campus area. Plenty of hanging space, big rooms, nice but not spectacular bathroom, clean, secure (it takes a key to enter the lobby, going by the receptionist and a card swipe for the elevator before you even get to your floor) and if you have business on campus (or a child there) it's just about ideal! No room service or restaurant or laundry or pool or spa, but that's not why you're there, is it? Plenty of food, campus or commercial, within a few blocks.

  • Liked — Location on campus at Brown, friendly casual student staff - great for visiting students!
  • Disliked — No laundry, room service, exercise or pool -but it's a student inn, not a resort!

“only if you absolutely have to be on campus”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2007

The one and only reason to stay here is location: in fact you should think carefully about how desperately you need to be on campus and research B&B's in the area first, in my opinion. Do you care whether you are staying in a norm, where marching bands can suddenly walk down the street and there are spontaneous eruptions of emotion in the middle of the night? Do you care that there is no business center and that the people at the desk will send you down the street to a copy shop while they sit in front of a computer and printer on a university campus? Do you care about temperature control and impossibly hard beds? Did I mention that this is a dorm? i sound more bitter than i am -- i just think for the money one should go elsewhere except in case of necessity.

“Clearly Brown Does Not Offer a Hotel Management Major”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2007

people found this review helpful

Based on the reviews. I booked one night here for my son and I for our college visit to Brown. The rooms are old and in need of some freshening but what was extremely disturbing was the strong odor coming out of the air conditioner. My son thought it smelled of yeast and I could not place it but it was unpleasant and we chose to open our windows rather than live with the odor. This should be the end of the review since this "hotel" is convenient for a Brown visit but what compelled me to write this review was the used condom packaging in the drawer by my bed. I do not need to be spoiled but coming across this sight was truly astonishing and something I hope none of you have to experience. The staff is disinterested at best and the breakfast is placed in an old conference room. Grab the coffee early because no one comes to make a fresh pot.
