We were several hours behind on our lengthy road trip - had intended to get to Grants Pass or Medford, but at 8:30 p.m. we decided we had to stop at Crescent City. No reservations, no advance research - the only guide we had to local hotels was a pamphlet we found at a restaurant. Pacific Inn was the first place we stopped; the lovely Asian lady was most helpful and seemed particularly concerned about our elderly mother's comfort. The rooms were clean and the beds were good. It's not much to look at, but under the circumstances we felt lucky to find it. Out back, in an adjoining little strip mall, there's a surf shop, a '60s "head" shop, and the local DNC headquarters... I lived in California years ago, and it was an amusing deja vu to see "Jerry Brown for Governor" signs!
