“Truly exceptional”

Horizon Guest House is a truly exceptional place. I think the view has magical properties -- just sitting there looking out at the ocean, I could feel all the little tensions I didn't even know I had going away. It's at an elevation of 1200 feet, on a hillside overlooking the ocean, surrounded by undeveloped ranch land; definitely the most peaceful B&B I've ever stayed at. At night the only sounds are the crickets. Even the refrigerators in the rooms are on timers so they don't make noise at night, which tells you something about the level of attention to detail at this place. Clem is welcoming and extremely helpful, but never overbearing at all, and he went out of his way to make sure our trip was successful. Breakfasts were excellent, flexibly timed and with fresh fruit grown on the property as well as plenty of other food. We particularly enjoyed the jacuzzi and pool with the great view, and playing with Clem's two dogs and meeting all the other animals on the property (goats, two horses, a cow and a donkey). I plan to return as soon as I can.

“Best B&B we've stayed in!”

We spent 3 nights at the Horizon Guest House in November and highly recommend it! The view is unbeatable, the rooms are large, clean and comfortable with private lanais and Clem is the perfect host! He makes incredible breakfasts, made to order whenever you happen to get up, using fresh fruits and vegetables from the property. When Clem is out for a morning cycle, his friend and helper Mike can also whip up a great breakfast! Clem is also is a wealth of information and is happy to make recommendations on things to do and where to eat. There is an outdoor grill and kitchen available for guests to use, as well as a large refrigerator, washer and drier, and lots of beach/snorkel toys. We enjoyed swimming in the infinity pool, relaxing in the hot tub and meeting the dogs, horses, cow, goats and donkey that live on the property. A wonderful place!

“Home from home...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

We originally planned to stay here one week but loved it so much we stayed for two. This is Clem's home and you will be made to feel like his house guests. The B&B is about ten miles south of Cooks Bay and is therefore rather remote, even the driveway off the main road takes you abut a quarter of a mile up the hill but with a car you are fine just remember to eat dinner before heading back (and Clem will recommend many places to eat). The house though is amazing and you will be relaxed from the first moment you see the view from the panoramic window. Clem has thought through everything (apparently at least two years of jottings have gone into the Horizon) from the gorgeous pool and bbq area to a dv library with over 800 titles, to board games, to warm weather jackets if you want to go up Mauna Kea, to snorkels and ice boxes and towels for the beach, a fridge, a poolside bbq kitchen. If you want something Clem is almost certain to have it! - he even sends a provision list before you arrive. Then there are the home cooked breakfasts....mmm, fruit straight from the garden and if you are lucky pancakes with homemade syrup, or freshly baked cornbread...there is also a homemade granola which will fill you up for the day :) our over breakfast conversations with Clem were a highlight on each day.
The B&B is focussed on the common area but as this is a small B&B this area is never crowded and you will want to stay gazing at the view... The rooms are a good size with en-suites and a little patio area to enjoy the view (all the rooms face forward for this purpose) The beds are not large and we felt a little tired as they are designed as a room to sleep in and shower in and for those purposes they are fine. The concrete floors although a relief in the heat are cold when it's cooler but that aside, the beauty of this place lies in it's location, communal areas and host. We would urge you to discover the horizon guest house and see if you want to leave.....

“Love, Love, Love this Place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011

We just returned from a wonderful four-day stay at Horizon Guest House. It was hard saying goodbye to the most amazing view on the Big Island.

Thanks to Michael for taking such good care of us in Clem's absence. Breakfast each day was a real treat. Fresh fruit (pineapple, payaya, etc.) picked from your gardens each day were so delicious. It was a blast visiting with and feeding Coco (cow), Sunny and Buck (horses), Pancho (donkey), and all those goats. Bebe and Bruno (dogs) were just great!

Before we arrived Clem helped me plan our time on the Big Island so we could get the most out of our full trip (not just the time we stayed with him). He also connected us with Jon Hasper (sailingjonny@gmail.com) who took us on a private kayak, snorkel, lava tube swim, and sea turtle enclave one day and a private night manta ray snorkel one evening. It was so much better than being stuck with a large group. Jon knows so much about the island and all the great adventures available. We can't wait to go back just for another of his unique adventure offerings.

This place is really special and we were made to feel at home right from the start. We spent days and nights enjoying the pool and hot tub overlooking the coast line. There is a great little shop near by (Hwy 11 101 mile marker) to pick up stuff to barbecue back by the pool. Be sure to try their shaved ice.

Without a doubt, we will stay at Horizon Guest House again on our next trip to Hawaii.

“INCREDIBLE! BEST BED AND BREAKFAST EVER...one of the most memorable vacations of my life, thanks Clem!!!”

This place is incredible, impeccable and breathtaking. Panoramic views of the Hawaiian coast from almost every single spot on the property. The service rivaled the Ritz Carlton, I'm not kidding, cause that's where we stayed on Maui right after Clem's. Clem is the best cook on the planet. My husband and I would wake up and excitedly whisper to each other, "I wonder what he's cooking today!" His cooking totally unexpectedly turned into the highlight of our trip! My husband and I went 7 months ago and still can't stop talking about his cooking. He was so sweet, pleasant and fun to be around, we ended up calling him the long lost uncle we wish we had. Clem thank you for one of the best vacations we've ever had.
