My first visit to Hawaii was in 2000. We chose a bed and breakfast because it was less expensive. And the last night was free if you stayed so many nights at Dan's. Boy, do I wish I had known there was a way to review places online back then. Maybe we could have saved ourselves the trouble. This guy is certifiably not right. I am now a member of trip advisor, and just out of curiosity decided to see if his place was on here, and interestingly enough, it was, and the things I read mirrored our experience exactly. I am not a breakfast person, so he got his feelings hrt when I didn't come out for breakfast. Then, I thought, ok, I will eat just to keep him happy (but I am the customer, right??). Well. He served chili rellenos with raw eggs on top. Oh, my, gosh....I despise eggs of any sort, and here my breakfast is topped with RAW eggs?!! Not to mention eating uncooked eggs is a health hazard. I simply couldn't bring myself to eat it, so he got very upset at me about this. His website said you could do your laundry...well, you can if you don't mind him bringing it in and dumping it on your bed before you have a chance to get it out and file it before it wrinkles. And he ranted any opportunity he got about anything that seemed to bother him at the moment. We disliked him so much that on our last "free" night we fled and went into kona to spend the night. Everything other reviewers said about him getting angry about accidentally breaking any of his rules was true. He would get furious! He was quite knowledgeable about local info and took my husband to some nice diving locations, but that is about the only positive thing I can say. Well, too be fair, his home is beautiful, and it is tranquil out there, (if he is not anywhere around any way), but it is in the middle of NOWHERE and he lies about how far it is from the beach. It is certainly not a 5 minute walk from the beach. More like a 10 minute ride in a car. And the bedroom we had was SO small. I don't know if he has adjusted his website to be more accurate these days. And he does freak out about the water usage. His place is far from Kona proper, so I recommend keeping sandwich and snack items in your room if you want to be able to eat. Otherwise it is a long trip into town. But seriously, he is an unstable individual and should be avoided at all costs. The only reason he is even in business is because of ignorance on the part of people like myself who had mo way of knowing what a horrible experience staying at his place would be.
