“An Oldie but a Goodie due to dedicated staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

I was initially nervous about staying at this hotel, after checking a number of travel site reviews, but after getting a good deal on a room there for an 11 day research trip to the area I committed. Ultimately I had a rare horror story that was salvaged by the dedicated staff and managers at Ramada. I awoke one morning to find what appeared to be large insects bites on my hands, and was very surprised by this since I thoroughly check every hotel room I ever stay in for bed bugs and other vermin, and found my room to be near spotless. Soon my hand began to swell and within 72 hours I had a severe allergic skin reaction to whatever I had come in contact with. I spent many hours in urgent care clinics to be told by doctors that it was probably spider bites on my hands (they have no idea what type) and that owing to my severe allergies I was having an unusual reaction to it. (On most people, the doc said, they probably would not even have noticed the bites). I informed the hotel staff of this, and they immediately sent the a maintenance team into the room. I followed and together we tore the room apart only to find nothing of note. Regardless, they then ordered that the room immediately be closed off and fumigated, and bumped me across the hall to a nicer room even helping me move all my belongings. Though it was a terrible ordeal, and it took me a week to recover physically, the hotel manager and offered a variety of refund options. Ultimately I was refunded for several nights through priceline, and although this may seem like a negative review believe it or not I would stay at that hotel again. Sure the building was a bit dated, but I appreciated them maintaining the building rather than wastefully bulldozing it and starting from scratch. At the end of the day I have stayed in 5 star resorts that could not hold a candle to the kind and thoughtful staff of this hotel. Always ready and willing to help me out, they represent this hotel far more than my own strange experience or any silly commentary on decor and design ever could. Thanks Ramada!

Room Tip: This hotel is pretty large, so if you require good wifi be sure to ask for a room closer to the fron...

We appreciated your honest review on our hotel - we encourage our guests to accurately describe their stays with us. As you noted, the hotel is an older property with its own character. Our staff strives to maintain the hotel in its peak condition. We do apologize for the unfortunate spider incident but also glad that we proactively addressed the situation. Our staff realize that you have many choices for your lodging needs - we do thank you for choosing us. We also invite you back to our hotel for future visits.

“Average hotel but did the job”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2011

Check in ok with helpful staff answering questions about Balloon Fiesta, which we'd come to see. Card passes did not work too well in outside doors and had to ask for replacement room as first one stank of cigarette smoke despite it being non smoking hotel. Chambermaid should have reported this. Second room not so well situated but clean and tidy with plenty of room for all our cases, etc. Free wifi so could book tickets on line for fiesta next day and managed to park right outside building for early morning get away. Breakfast also served early enough to get to fiesta which was bonus. Usual continental stuff with added eggs and sausage. Dislike the US throw away culture though as all food served on polystyrene plates/dishes with plastic cutlery, so plenty of waste on month long trip in the States. Whole hotel could do with updating and making lighter as quite dull but was value for money so no real complaints.

We were pleased that you selected our hotel for your recent Balloon Fiesta stay - we invite all our guests to offer their honest feedback. This is the only way we can offer a stronger product based on our guests' reviews. We do acknowledge there are moments when guests who choose to smoke may leave their sliders open to the patio or even do it in the room. I am glad that we were able to accommodate your request and moved you to a different room. Your comments about our breakfast are much appreciated - we will strive to offer a greener option in the future with the cups, flatware and plates. Since your stay, we have changed our bedding packages in all rooms. We are still updating other room features like our 32" flat screens. If ever in Albuquerque in the future - do consider our hotel for your stay.

“Yikes...weren't too sure, but turned out fine”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Had a hard time finding it at first as we booked the room under the hotel name "Scandia Courtyard"...from what we eventually learned it changed to Ramada a week earlier. Anyway once we got the correct room we booked we were happier with the room than we expected, by the looks of the outside. The door stuck so it was VERY hard to get in the room but the inside of the room was fine especially for the price. it was clean, spacious, and recently renovated. The breakfast was typical, and the coffee machine that included expresso, latte, and capachino was a treat. The office employees were fine...not overly friendly, but fine.

Room Tip: upstairs near the work-out room was nice and quiet, and easy in and out.

We appreciate your choice in ABQ. hotel stays ... we do strive to adapt our product based on what our guests want. It was exactly the comments from guests like you who wanted a larger room and more choices with their morning beverage; this is why we made the choice to move forward and offer our latte, hot chocolate, and other choices with our "coffee" machine ... you pick your beverage, hit the button, voila ... :) We appreciate your comments ... and invite you to choose us again for your future ABQ. stay!

“Never again!”

At 1st look you might this hotel is fine. I was unable to shower because when my husband used the shower it wouldn't drain and filled the tub with black chunks!! It was disgusting. The toilet tank lid had to be kept off so we could make it stop running after each flush.
This hotel was previously the Sandia Courtyard ( not by Marriott!) and before that a Howard Johnsons. The upgraded rooms are very outdated. Mold in the grout line in the tub.
Beds are fine with decent linens IF you insist on an "upgrade" room!

“Like The Economy, This Place Needs Stimulus”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

This is an older property in a hotel cluster, located next door to the famed Owl Restaurant and Diner, a destination eatery right off the Interstate. Labor Day Weekend the hotel was nearly nearly sold-out. We had a Family Reunion there and this was a very afforadable site for a large group. There was also a Softball Tournament nearby, so we had several teams staying there as well.

PLUS / MINUS RATINGS:

1) Very friendly staff, from Front Desk to Housekeeping to Maintenance. They kept the the place very clean, considering the crowd. (plus, plus)

2) The bathroom had the newer water saver shower head (a plus); they also had new toilets - the high-efficiency, water-saving oblong-bowl type replacing the older round bowl design (a plus).

3) Electronic-customer-coded safe in room, large enough for an oversized laptop and accessories (plus, plus, plus)

4) No microwave or refrigerator, but I didn't request them (neutral)

5) Crappy ironing board (minus), decent iron - still this is a minus.

6) Comfy clean bed (plus, plus, plus)

7) Good but noisy a/c unit/heat pump. (This is New Mexico in September - the weather fluctuated throughout the day, so I give this a plus for comfort)

8) Good selection of channels on TV (plus)

9) Sufficient outlets for computer & phone chargers (plus)

10) The staff was extremely nice and helpful, quickly providing anything I asked (plus, plus, plus)

11) Bathroom, Part II - in the bath, the marble vanity / shelf extends from door-to-sink-to-tub. This extended shelf povides plenty of space for your stuff (plus), - BUT - This same shelf extends over the toilet. Now that they have the new oblong bowl, YOU CAN'T COMPLETELY RAISE THE TOILET LID OR SEAT. (MINUS, MINUS, MINUS, MINUS)

I understand the need for water conservation, especially in the Desert Southwest, but someone (corporate?) ordered / installed all this new hardware before being sure they could be properly installed.

Summary -

A decent room for the price. It appears that they're working to improve the facilities - that's nice to see in this economy. I didn't ask for a new room because the place was sold out. I made do with the bathroom situation; hopefully they'll cut the marble shelf and raise it six inches. I heard this same bathroom story from more than one other person.

I plan to be in ABQ again within a couple of years. I may check this place out again if I'm on a tight budget and don't need to impress anyone. Hopefully they will continue with sensible improvements.

We are pleased to have hosted your family reunion during the Labor Day weekend. As you have noted, we were sold out that weekend - as an older established hotel - we do find groups that come back year after year. Unfortunately, as we upgrade our hotel - we realize that some of our changes will not please everyone and some changes are still taking place after your group booked with us. However, we will always strive to offer the best negotiated rate with our groups - as we did with your family reunion. Definately, keep us in mind for future bookings as we upgrade all rooms within our hotel (some of these upgrades include the flat screen tvs going into all rooms). We thank you for offering your comments and have taken them to heart as we move forward with our hotel changes.
