I got booked at this hotel through my business travel agent, and I forgot to check TripAdvisor before I left like I normally do. The hotel is in a relatively decent location, right off the interstate, so there's quick access to other parts of town. But it's also in a rather industrial area, with lots of tractor-trailers and construction vehicles coming and going. There are no places to eat that are pretty close; there's a Denny's at the La Quinta down the road. There is a gas station, Subway, and McDonald's about a mile away, but you can't/shouldn't walk to them.
The hotel is quite old; a drive-up-to-your-door-style motel, which always makes me leery as a female traveling alone. From what I've read, the style is not characteristic of Hampton Inns at all. The room size is reasonable and internet service was free and worked well, but my heater couldn't keep the room decently warm. I ended up sleeping in sweats and hiking socks, along with the provided blanket my two nights. The heat always seemed to work fine for an hour or so, but it kept blowing cool air as if it needed to rest.
There was the previous traveler's hair on one of my towels, an electrical outlet in the room didn't work, and stains on my shower curtains. The place was adequately kept, but they could have done a better job with cleaning. My door keys stopped working halfway through my stay, and after going back and forth to the office to get them rekeyed/reset, maintenance was sent to my room. He arrived in a timely manner. It was found that the key reader was bad, so I had to sit in my room with my door gaped open for 10 minutes while he fixed it. No real surprise there, after everything else I'd already experienced.
The pros of this hotel are that the staff is WONDERFUL; they are very friendly and knowledgeable about the area, and are well-prepared to help their guests. They keep pre-printed directions of local attractions and restaurants at the front desk if you need help deciding where to eat lunch/dinner. They provide a decent breakfast for free in the hotel, egg/cheese omelets, cereals, fresh fruit, waffles, toast, etc. If I could transplant the staff to a nicer/less run-down hotel, I would have given a better overall rating. But yes, their staff saved the hotel from a one-star rating.
Overall, stay somewhere else unless you have no other choice, and if you don't have any other choice, make your stay for no more than a day or so.
Room Tip: Stay on any side of the building not facing Ellison Ave. (the main road)
