We had read the positive reviews of this place and the praises of Kay the staffer and were delighted to find everything was true! Large, comfortable room in very convenient location--much better location than the chains on the edge of town. reasonably priced. Free breakfast was not much, although Kay did make hard boiled eggs one day an fetched some yogurt for me when I asked if she had any like the previous days. Happily provided extra pillows and towels. A very pleasant experience. Would have liked a dresser rather than living out of my suitcase but that is really a very minor complaint.
We needed a place to stay for one night on our way from Houston to Colorado and after reading reviews for motels in Albequerque we chose Sandia Peak. When we first drove up I wasn't too sure about the neighborhood but the motel itself proved to be fantastic. The husband & wife owners were extremely friendly and helpful. Upon check in they showed us where breakfast would be served in the morning, they showed us the small heated pool and they showed us to our room.
The room was very very clean. I am super picky and I couldn't find one thing that wasn't spotless. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of room for 2 adults and 2 kids to spread out after a long day of driving.
The pool is a tiny heated pool. My daughters and I swam while my husband sat out on a bench and took in the scenery of mountains in the distance. The pool is very small but it was very clean and it felt nice to relax for a bit after being in the car all day. While we were swimming the owner Kay came in to talk to us. She brought us large towels to use after swimming and she asked us where we were from and if our room was ok. Then she said to make sure that if there was anything at all we needed to please let her know and she would do everything to make our stay pleasant.
The next morning we went in for a typical continental breakfast. Nothing special but not bad - cereals, juices, coffee, oatmeal, muffins and rolls. We don't typically eat a large hot breakfast anyway so it was just enough for us. While we were eating Kay came in with several trays of fresh cut fruits and served them to eat table.
In conclusion, this small family owned and operated motel proved to be a wonderful stay. It is spotless clean and the owners are some of the nicest and most helpful of any place we have stayed. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone and I will without a doubt stay here again whenever I happen to be in Albequerque.
For a motel, this is one of the better ones. The area feels safe, and the rooms have been upgraded. The beds were comfy. Upon checking into my room, Kay was very helpful and pleasant to work with, even offering an Internet cable for my laptop.
The wireless was so slow, but then again, even the wired connection was. But it was nice to even have free Internet.
I did notice that the peep hole was on the heating unit, so I had to screw it in myself. I didn't make use of the pool or the breakfast, opting for breakfast at Slate instead.
After reading all the great reviews of this small, friendly place, we decided to try it the week before Thanksgiving. Kay the owner takes all the calls, makes the reservations and honors her commitments. When we arrived, she offered us an upgrade free of charge. We ended up in room 218 which had a king bed, desk, fridge, microwave and coffee maker. All worked fine and came in handy during the 5 nights we stayed there.
Breakfast is a very simple continental, with nothing hot aside from coffee and/or hot water/tea. She puts out instant oatmeal of various flavors, muffins, toast, dry cereal with milk available and if it's not out, she'll bring you the daily newspaper to look over. it was enough to get us fed, full and off on an adventure.
Kay is one of the friendliest people we've met. She treated us like family, gave us help finding local places to eat, and offering advice on anything we needed. When we were going to take the train to Santa Fe, she even offered to drive us to the station so we didn't have to deal with the parking. We ended up driving, but the offer was much appreciated. How many motels offer this service? No charge either.
They are in the process of renovating a number of the rooms with new carpeting, tiles and painting. She showed us around to other rooms, and the new stuff looks great. The room we were in, 218, was on the list to be renovated, but even as is, was clean and dust free. It will be even better once renovated.
If I had to find anything to complain about, I'd say the Internet could be faster. Internet worked OK, nothing to write home about. A little slow, but NOT dial-up speed. As is typical, depending what room you are in, the signal is better or worse. They have at least 3 routers on premises and I believe getting some more. For looking up things to do, it worked fine for the 2-3 devices we always had attached. There were also plenty of outlets, which seems rare these days in hotels/motels that we've visited. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat if we're back in Albuquerque.
