“Prison”

We visited for a murder mystery week end.The mystery was poorly written and should be called a book reading. The breakfast and meal that are included with the mystery weekend price were cold and of poor quality. The inn is located in a very bad neighborhood. I guess that is why Ken and Francois lock the doors to the inn and do not give guests a key. It was as if we were in prison not to mention the danger had there been a fire. We were locked in and couldn't get out until the owners unlocked the doors. On Saturday morning my husband showered (slow cold drip of water turned on by using the broken and taped faucet handle) bent over to fit under the shower head and being very careful not to pull on the curtain because the rod holding it up was also poorly repaired using tape. He then went downstairs to go for a cup of coffee for us. He was appalled to find out that we were locked inside the inn. This was very shocking and hard to believe considering that the guest rooms did not have locks. We are early risers and the inn keepers are not therefore we waited from 4:30 am until 8:30 am when they awoke for a cup of coffee. My husband mentioned this to Ken who laughed it off as if it was no big deal. Ken didn't tell my husband that he could prepare coffee in the kitchenette or give him any suggestion as to how to make or get coffee the next day. Later Saturday we found a department store and purchased a Keurig, k cups and everything else that we needed to make coffee the next morning. We also purchased a container of tea and asked that it be kept cold. Francois informed him that he should drink it downstairs in the kitchenette in case of a spill. I was again appalled. I set up and used the Keurig for tea that night and coffee the next morning. One problem solved.,,or so I thought. We had purchased an additional night stay so that we would have time to see some of the historic sites in Petersburg. We went site seeing and upon our return Francois informed us that she had disconnected the Keurig and that we were forbidden to use it. She also said that we should have asked her prior to having it in the room. Since we couldn't come and go as we wanted to we told her that we would be going to dinner and would be returning in one to two hours. We left at six and returned at about 7:15. We waited in our vehicle ( the inn is kept locked and guests are not given keys ) until 8:30 when they returned. We got out of the car, informed Ken and Francois that we would be leaving immediately, we packed, loaded our vehicle, and were driving home by 9:00. The inn is in terrible disrepair both inside and out. There are so many historic sites in Petersburg that we will probably return. I cannot imagine anyone wanting to return to La Villa Romaine. We certainly will not.

Room Tip: I am certain that there are other B&B's in Petersburg VA. Find one of those.

“Wonderful saty with delightful Innkeepers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2008

It was the first visit to La Villa Romaine for my husband and I, and we both enjoyed it very much. From the moment we arrived, we recieved the most gracious welcome from Francoise who actually met us out front when we arrived. We were very impressed with the magnificent architecture and exquisitely decorated 1853 Italliante style mansion. But the real treat was getting to visit with Ken and Francoise. They saw to it that we were very comfortable, and they were extremely helpful with directions to local sights as well as recommending several yummy restaurants.
We stayed 2 nights in the Louis IVX room and absolutely loved the bed! Nice big bathroom too.
We would definately recommend this inn.

“A Piece of History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 April 2008

This was our first stay at a B & B and it was a great experience. The hosts were gracious, sharing the history of their home with us. Our room was comfortable and we slept well. Breakfast was great.

The house is in an area which needs some revitalization, but restoration has already begun on many area historical homes. We had no problem parking on the street in front of the house.

We had hoped to stay in the room that General Birney of the Civil War was reported to have stayed in. Just down the street is where General Grant stayed to keep an eye on him.

The bathroom adjoining our room evoked visions of a 1920s-30s bathroom with its original shower, floor and wall tiles.

The home is beautifully furnished with antiques and furnishings from the owners' travels to France.

The historic downtown area is not far and boasts a variety of shops, and restaurants.

“European Feel”

My wife and I were on our way to DC and picked the La Villa out of the blue. The owners are very nice and gave us a grand tour of the house. They have both traveled and collected extensively from France and Germany and have decorated the house with their finds. They made us feel very welcome and we talked for quite awhile.
We were the only ones that night. We ate dinner at a great Italian place about a mile away. That entire part of the town is under revitalization. It's a little rough right now so the views around the neighborhood aren't great but I could see it turning around. The breakfast was great in the morning in the kitchen by the fire. We didn't get a chance to tour the town but it's a major civil war battle site and we'll do it next time.

We enjoyed our stay very much. The owners were very down to earth. They would go the extra mile and suggest places for dinner and make reservations. They were very knowledgable about the activities in and around petersburg. We are planning a return trip for one of the murder mystery weekends.
