“Good Hotel, Location is So-so”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

Got a deal at this hotel on a discount web-site, and we were pleased with our service and stay. Some of the other negative reviews we read were NOT our experience. Our room was clean, exceptionally large, with plenty of room to spread out, including a modest living area where we could comfortably lounge around. We did not utilize the complimentary breakfast, so cannot rate the food option, but it is provided.

Location is so-so. Our discount website labels "south" Corpus Christi as a pretty long area of the city, so we ended up here, a bit out of the way from where we would have preferred. It's more like "west" Corpus Christi, and is not particularly close to any prime attractions. But the city is easy enough to get around in, so it wasn't a big deal for us. The location is easily accessible though, so unless you just need to be near certain locales, it probably is not an issue for most.

Other family stayed at this same hotel for a family event, and were also pleased with it overall, especially the size of the rooms. Very convenient for families, or multiple guests in one room.

“Good hotel”

We recently stayed here on the 16th December 2011. We were quite impressed with this hotel. The rooms were big and beds comfortable. This is a great place to stay with kids as they have lots of room to run around. Though they were told off for using the computers in the business room without an adult. It is close to lots of restaurants and shops Walmart is nearby, we were daring and even walked there! Breakfast was good and coffee available all day. They even have a social hour with free drinks.

“Paying more does not always equal quality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

The front desk staff was friendly and tried to be accommodating at check in and check out. I work in the hotel industry and have so for 7 years. It is a becoming a reiterated fact that paying a little more than I would for a specific level of hotel does not mean that I will get the quality that I am accustomed to. I was moved to two new rooms due to cigar/other smoke smells left behind from a previous guest in this non smoking hotel? Once settled into my room a few more noticeable issues arose as the night went on...room smell was not the best, hair in the bathroom, stained towels, stained sofa and chair, shower curtain was not clean, etc. I am usually a forgiving person as I am well aware even the best housekeeper can miss something occassionally but whoever is inspecting is definitely not as detailed as needed to ensure each guest has a great stay. At check out it was a simple sorry that you were not satisfied and I will pass your information on to my manager who has yet to call almost two days after the fact. Needless to say it will be a long time before I give another Hawthorn a chance when one of my hotels is not readily available.

“Not Great But Not Bad Either”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2011

I booked this hotel using Hotwire for $93 a night. I felt that was very overpriced for what we got. It seems that Corpus Christi hotels are overpriced though. Perhaps the fact that we went during spring break had something to do with inflated hotel prices? At any rate, I feel that $93 a night was to much for what we got. Had the hotel been $60 or less a night I would have had no complaints.

My mom, pre-teen daughter and myself stayed at this hotel from March 17-20, 2011. I booked the hotel on Hotwire and they ended up sticking us in a room with 1 king sized bed. When I asked if they could move us to a room with two double/queen beds the front desk said that would not be possible since they were all booked but that our room had a sofa that made into a bed. This greatly annoyed me as I do not like sofa beds so all three of us ended up sleeping in the bed. We aren’t large people so it really wasn’t an issue but I was still annoyed. The bed was very comfortable though. The front desk staff was nice though and they did give us a late check-out (of 1pm as opposed to the regular check-out time of noon) on the day we left.

The room was much smaller than I expected for a “suite” but it was adequate. We had a “wet bar” type area in the room with a fridge, microwave, coffee maker and sink. The a/c kept the room very cool. It was one of the a/c units that’s stuck below the window. There was no exhaust fan and no ventilation in the bathroom (since there wasn’t central air in the room and there wasn’t an exhaust fan in the bathroom) so it was very hot and steamy in the bathroom after taking a shower which made it impossible to use to get dressed and/or apply make-up without waiting for it to air out and cool down. The lighting in the bathroom was awful for applying make-up (very harsh fluorescent) and the room was very dark since the lamps didn’t give off much light and there was no overheard lighting so the room wasn’t any better. We tried opening the curtains so we could apply makeup in the mirrored closest doors that were right next to the window but the window was behind us and so was the sunlight so it was no better either. The room and everything in it was very clean though and it was quiet. Wireless internet was provided at no extra charge but the connection in our room (202) was not that great. I kept losing signal. Parking was free.

The complimentary breakfast was nothing to write home about. They had soggy scrambled style eggs each morning with bacon or sausage and sometimes both. I don’t eat bacon and the sausage was undercooked for my taste. The last morning we were there they mixed the sausage (still undercooked) in with the eggs and had bacon separate. They also had a pastry, either donuts or muffins that they didn’t bother to replenish after they ran out even though the posted hours for breakfast were not over. They also had a selection of cold cereal and instant oatmeal. They had waffles (that looked like frozen eggo waffles,) bagels, regular toast and English muffins that you could toast in a toaster on the breakfast bar and on the last morning they had pre-cooked French toast that you could toast in addition to English muffins, bagels and regular toast. They also had fresh fruit and fruit juice as well as yogurt on one of the mornings and coffee. The coffee was actually very good and it was available throughout the day regardless of what time of day it was.

The hotel was located near some restaurants. Lubys is in the same parking lot. After we took our luggage to our room on the first evening we set out to find a place to eat dinner and the GPS took us through a neighborhood behind the hotel and I got the impression that the hotel was in a not so great part of town because of that but after getting lost in a neighborhood by the USS Lexington it became clear to me that there are much worse parts of town in Corpus than the part of town this hotel is located in. This hotel isn’t really that close to the large attractions in Corpus (USS Lexington and Texas State Aquarium) but it was still less than 10 miles from them.

This hotel was an okay place to stay. If I could find a hotel for $93 a night on the shoreline near downtown, the USS Lexington and the Texas State Aquarium I would not stay here again. If I could not find a cheaper hotel in the Corpus area that was at least the same star rating as this one/offered similiar amenities I would stay here again though.

Thanks so much for staying at the Hawthorn Suites.

I am so sorry that you experienced some disappointments while you were here. Our main goal is to make sure all of our guest have the best service and accommodations here in Corpus Christi. Spring Break is a hard time to come because it is on a first come first serve basis, so the room types 1 bed or 2 beds are based on availability with Third Party reservations. We have no control over them.

Next time you come call us directly and you will experience a successful stay.

Thanks again and have a Great Day!

“Good hotel..upgraded..more than we expected..”

Booked a 'suite' on travel website for a mini-family vacation from Dallas. We had never been to Corpus so even with checking on line where to stay, what to do..we decided on this hotel..seemed central to everything we were interested in. Good choice! Not far from the beaches whether you go to Mustang Island, Padre or the Corpus beaches. Even with Friday after-work traffic we made it to Mustang Island in 25 minutes. Beautiful beaches..not crowded..great water. The hotel upgraded us to a 1 room suite which was nice for the price we paid. Seperate living area, fully stocked kitchenette, dining room area. The bedroom was roomy, good mattress, PLENTY OF PILLOWS (which you dont normally find in hotels), bathroom was well equipped, many towels. Small pool but when you're that close to the beach..the pool isnt that important. Breakfast was at 6am, hot and different each day (stayed there 4 days), plenty of very good coffee, juices..just a nice breakfast. Which is included with your stay ($ saver especially when traveling with a teenage boy!) Very nice staff, helpful and courteous. Enjoyed our stay and enjoyed Corpus. Would stay here again.
