I have never had a problem finding a nice (Hilton, Marriott etc) cheap (less than $100) hotel in Salt Lake City. Something must have been going on last week because all the decent places were booked or wanting $200-300 a night. We ended up at the Shilo ($119) on the reccomendation of a friend who assured us it was "fine" with the caveat that she had last stayed there many many years ago. To say that this place has definately seen better days is too kind.
We checked in, I had to wait about 20 minutes in line even though there was only one person in front of me- there were 4 people at the front desk but they all seemed very confused and 3 of them were standing there talking while only 1 person was checking people in. We went to our room which smelled awful (I said like a sweaty old man, my boyfriend argued it was just "musty old hotel room") and were dismayed to see that we had only a nasty mildewed shower and no tub. From the website pictures this didn't seem quite right to me so I mentioned it when we went downstairs and the poor teenage boy at the desk was dumbfounded that they even had rooms without a bath tub (we had apparently been put in a handicapped room- but why?). He was pleasant and said they had plenty of rooms so would be glad to move us. The new room had a tub and did not smell so bad (at first- the smell came back the next day which made me think perhaps it was a serious hygeine problem on the part of housekeeping staff?) but microwave was broken and iron was missing and the TV only got about half the channels it was supposed to. Bed was sunken in the middle. Water took at least 15 minutes to get warm....we were on the 3rd floor so it shouldn't have taken that long to "get up there" which is what the front desk staff said the problem was. I heard others complaining about the water temp and pressure every morning. Towels were replaced but one day we got no bathmat, just several hand towels instead, and no new washcloths. The fridge in our first room was not cold at all, the fridge in our second room was so cold it froze everything- there was no temp control. Elevators were unreliable....we ended up taking the stairs several times after waiting for elevator to come for several minutes....not a huge deal since we were on the 3rd floor but imagine if we had been higher? Parking was free which was nice for downtown but was almost completely full the first night- we had to wait for a space- this is because its also a public pay parking lot so if enough people are paying there aren't spaces for all the guests! Parking lot was an ice rink too- I fell and we complained but no one was terriblty concerned. Only one of our keycards worked, we got a replacement but it didn't work either.
It wasn't all bad......I half expected to get bed bugs and I did not. Internet was free and worked. Service in cafe with free basic breakfast was surprising pleasant, prompt and professional considering all those qualities lacking throughout the rest of the property. I can't imagine any circumstances under which we would stay at the Shilo again.
