I was stranded in SLC after not making a stand-by flight. All I needed was a place to rest at for like 5-6 hours. I decided to gamble and try Hotwire one more time. I figured since Hotwire is a national name and does national advertising that I would be put in a national brand. I quickly learned, that is not the case. Hotwire even says, 2 star hotels would be places like La Quinta or Super 8 (examples are national brands). Not sure when it changed names from a Ramada to Amelia's Inn and Suites - I assume it has not been long since they still had Ramada shuttles, room keys, etc. This experience will be the last time I use Hotwire.
I called for the shuttle, they said it would be sent right over. I waited 30+ minutes. I called back, she said it just dropped off a passenger and she would send it back. I continued to wait. I overheard another person on a phone asking if the shuttle would have Amelia's on it. We then found out that the shuttle was pulled over by two squad cars. We approached the police and they said it will be a while. I then overheard one of the officers telling another officer to feel free to detain him and put him in the back of the squad if he wanted. Not sure what happened but it appears not to have been a simple moving violation. I called and asked if we could take a taxi and be reimbursed. Front desk reluctantly agreed.
I walked into the hotel and was hit immediately with the overpowering stench of old pancake syrup and failure. I was given my room key along with a sticky note that had my room number on it. I have traveled to SLC many times and at no point have I ever questioned or been concerned about being in an environment until now.
The room was terribly old and super dated. I locked the door and used the securtiy hinge which had 3 of 4 screws holding it in. I was so irritated with the situation, I didn't rest well that night. The only positive thing about the room is that the stench from the lobby didn't follow me into the room.
Shuttle left on time the next morning and I couldn't be happier to be on it. We were able to make it to the airport without being pulled over.
This hotel needs to be demolished.
