Ended up here after submitting a Priceline bid for a rate of $50 per night. Even though that's less than half of the rack rate, it's probably not worth what I'm paying. Frankly, I'm surprised that this hotel gets so many positive reviews.
This is a old, old hotel that has been partially renovated. The lobby and hallways are in good condition. But who cares? It's the room that matters. And the room had a leaky, rotting window, ugly carpeting, and furniture that looked like it came from a garage sale.
My room had a king size bed, a tiny desk and other modest furniture, a really old TV, and hardly any room to move around. It was large enough for one person, but two people would be tripping over each other if they stayed in a room this size. The mattress was very good and very firm. Suggestion to management: A queen bed, instead of a king, would allow a bit more walking space in the room.
When I stay at a hotel, I'm more interested in function than decor, but the decor in this place is downright depressing. The walls and everything in the room are either brown or a yellowed, off-white. There are no pictures on the walls. I realize that the owners are trying to keep the place looking "historic", but they could have at least used a bit of contrast in the room decor. Whoever designed the decor had no imagination whatsoever.
The bathroom, which has only a shower and no tub, was the absolutely tiniest bathroom that I've ever seen and was always freezing cold. The sink is outside the bathroom and has only a small -- and I do mean small -- shelf above it to put cosmetics. There is no countertop or vanity area. The towels felt like sandpaper. Correction: Sandpaper is softer. They provided only one bar of soap that was intended to be shared between the shower and the sink, although they provided another bar of soap after I requested it.
There were no guest laundry bags in the room (plastic bags for guest to put their laundry in), and when I asked if they had any laundry bags, the desk clerk acted like I was asking for the moon. I'm fairly sure that out of the hundreds of hotels and motels at which I've stayed, this is the only one that did not provide laundry bags for guests.
Internet access costs $9.95 per day, an astoundingly high price when so many hotels provide it for free. Parking (with unlimited in/out) is available right next to the hotel for $10 per 24 hours, or $5 per 10 hours. Overnight parking between 6 PM and 8 AM is free at metered spaces, if you can find an empty space overnight, which is sometimes difficult in downtown Salt Lake City.
I've stayed a several hotels in Salt Lake, and I can safely say that this is the worst.
Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the side near the "Inferno" bar and nightclub, as the Inferno is very noisy...
