“The perfect place for a genealogist”

I travel every January to visit the the Family History Library to do research on my family lines. I have stayed at this Hotel for my last four visits as it is only a block away from the library and you can't get more convenient than that. It is older, but the rooms are clean and well kept, price is moderate, and staff is friendly and helpful. There is a free shuttle from the airport to the hotel between 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. A free trolley runs out front (I've taken it to the Gateway Shopping Center for dinner). For my purposes, this is the ideal place to stay.

“Elevators don't work, staff is rude”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

We waited 10+ minutes for an elevator and then called down to the front desk to see what was going on. (I had just had abdominal surgery two days prior and wasn't going to walk down 12 flights.) The front desk said they should be working. Finally an elevator arrived. When we got in the elevator a man called down from the elevator shaft and said the lift was out of service. 20 minutes later we make it to the ground floor! Hallelujah! (Thank goodness we didn't get stuck *in* an elevator!) The clerk at the front desk couldn't have cared less about our frustration. I would say customer service in general is lacking throughout the entire state in Utah, and you will find an exceptional example of that at the Plaza.

“Solid Performer”

My wife and I flew into Salt Lake airport about 11:45 PM. The hotel shuttle had stopped running for the night but a cab was only $23 from the airport. The hotel is simple, decor is a little dated but they were putting up new wall paper while we were there and the carpets looked brand new. For an older hotel, it was very clean and well-maintained. Our room was large and the king bed was very comfortable. The staff was polite and helpful. This isn't a 4-star hotel but is comfortable, clean, quiet and hundreds of dollars less than other downtown hotels. The price and the location are perfect.

Downtown Salt Lake is a very walk-able area and this hotel is smack dab in the middle of it all. If you want to go further, the light rail stations is directly across the street and will take you to the greater Salt Lake Valley and connects with the UTA ski busses taking you to places like Alta, Snowbird, Brighton and Solitude.

If you want to save a few bucks this is definately a very convenient, comfortable and inexpensive hotel.

“Wonderful place to spend New Year's Eve!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

On the homeward bound leg of a 19 day driving tour we found out we would be in the Salt Lake City area for New Year's Eve. I wanted a hotel room where we could enjoy the lights and the fireworks and the festivities from the windows in our room and waffled over staying here (which seemed the prime location) based on some earlier reviews that were less that stellar.

WOW! Were we surprised and pleasantly so! Check in was handled by two young men who were happy to recommend restaurants and to give us the lowdown on the TRAX/lightrail system in front of the hotel. Parking was in the adjacent deck for $5.00 for the night and the lower two levels had direct access to the hotel as long as you were in by 11pm. On the back side of the hotel is the LDS Genealogy Center and Genealogy Packages are available from the hotel.

I asked for a Deluxe King room on the front of the hotel as high up in floors as possible. We ended up on the 11th floor with full length double doors and a spectacular view of the Salt Palace Convention Center and eventually the New Year's Eve fireworks. The room was spacious with a couch and a small table with two chairs as well as all the usual amenities. Had I been there to work on my Family Tree instead of eat Mexican Food and enjoy the celebration it would have also been a perfect room.

Coming in to the hotel through the basement door from the parking deck did remind me a little of a hospital or dormitory basement - sterile white walls and lots of rooms with doors that had glass in the top half and a curtain for privacy. Not at all creepy, just a little odd. And they do mean 11pm for locking that parking deck door. After dinner we did have to park and walk out to the front door for entrance to the lobby and our rooms.

We plan to come back to Salt Lake City for more than just an overnight and will definitely stay here again. Temple Square is just across the street east to the left of the front door and restaurants and shopping stretch out down the street toward the south. I hate paying more than $100 a night (base price) for a hotel room and this lovely gem with a AAA discount fit that budget quite well.

Got up and out Sunday morning in time to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra perform their weekly radio broadcast live and in person. A quick walk to the Tabernacle (or in the summer or holidays to the LDS Convention Center) is also a pleasant one in the clean, well kept city by the Great Salt Lake.

Room Tip: Some travelers have complained about the light rail noise on the front of the hotel. Ask for a room...

“Top Choice Hotel EVERYTIME!”

We live fairly close to Salt Lake, so therefor travel there on a regular basis, and this is almost ALWAYS our hotel. It is very nice, well cleaned, amazing employees, good prices, and GREAT location! We always request a high up room for the view! The swimming pool is on the smaller side but it isn't horrible, and the hot tub is amazing! And the beds are really comfortable as well.

Room Tip: Higher ones for view!
