This hotel is not for everyone, but if you're looking for an inexpensive, clean (but not necessarily quiet) room, the Downtown Hotel is fine. The rooms are well maintained and basic needs are met. Both of our rooms had the shared bathrooms, and having one available for showers or general use was never an issue. As a matter of fact, our teenage daughter enjoyed the 'euro-style' setting. The rooms are quite noisy, however (very thin walls, and the hotel is located on a corner of the busy main street of town), and if it's warm you'll need to have your windows open for fresh air and tolerate the noise. It's very convenient to Olympic NP, as well as downtown restaurants.
I made our reservations several months in advance and was told one of our king rooms would have it's own bathroom and a 'view'. The 'view' turned out to be a roof no more than four or five feet away, allowing little opportunity for sunshine or air circulation, so we opted to take one of the shared bathroom kings.
While we were disappointed with that aspect, the staff was very friendly and helpful, and the other guests, who seemed mostly to be walk-ins, were considerate of others in the facility.

Clean. Very large suite with kitchenette for $95. Perfect art-deco spot for young and old alike. WIFI worked super.

As others have said, this is a Euro style hotel similar to many B&B's where there are large rooms with shared bathrooms in the hall. It is cute but not outstanding. This floor has 4 individual bathrooms that open into the hall. Twelve rooms share those 4 bathrooms. We had no problems having a bathroom available anytime we needed it. That is the best I can say about our experience. Perhaps a room on the other side of the hall would be better or one of the rooms on the lower floor but this one is not worth staying in ever again.
I'm writing this at midnight as I sit in Room 8, encouraging my kids to try to sleep. The squealing tires from the street below and the banging of the semi's as they travel the street are keeping the entire family awake. We have to leave at 7 AM to catch the early ferry to Victoria, BC (why we chose this location). As we are traveling in June, the sun doesn't go down until nearly 10 pm but the only thing covering the windows are flimsy DUSTY/DIRTY metal mini blinds. No way to darken the room at all. The sink in the room, towels, and bedding are clean but no other furniture has been dusted except for a once over. Reminds me of how my 10 year old dusts furniture, never moving anything so there is dust left in many locations.
For another $30, we could have stayed in a hotel a few blocks away where you could park near the door and didn't have to haul everything up 2 flights of stairs. We would have had a continental breakfast, phone in room, bathroom in room, and a quieter night.
Definately NOT worth the $79 I paid for the room.

If you are visiting the Olympic Peninsula and are on a budget you should definitely consider staying at the Downtown Hotel. We used this hotel as our home base while hiking/exploring in the area, including a day trip to Victoria, BC (ferry is a block from the hotel). The room was basic (bed, nightstand, t.v. and sink) but comfortable, tastefully decorated and very clean. I was a bit hesitant about the shared bathroom situation before arriving but found all of the shared bathrooms to be spotless. The hotel also has internet access (great for planning travels) and let us do a load of laundry at no charge while we were there.

The only negative was that the walls were a bit thin, so if you are a light sleeper you may want to request a room that is not near the main street.

We spent 2 nights at the Downtown Hotel in Port Angeles and rented 2 of the "Euro rooms". The rooms were spotless. We opted for the least expensive rooms with the shared bathrooms and had absolutely no complaints about the cleanliness or decor. They were a terrific value especially with the off-season rates. There is no elevator so be prepared to carry your bags to the second floor lobby and rooms on the third floor.
The rooms are simply appointed so don't expect a comfy arm chair and desk but otherwise they were fine. Ours had a nice table and straight back chairs. The restaurant below (not affiliated with the hotel) is fine for simple home cooked style meals...portions are pretty large. The free wireless internet worked great in our room and there is also a small library with a free internet capable computer available (with printer.) This was great especially compared to the high end Seattle hotels I stayed in earlier in my trip where they wanted to charge $10 per day to use the internet in my room.
