“Decent room, tiny TV”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We overnight in Omarama on 31st Dec. Interesting place in the middle of nowhere. We booked Heritage gateway hotel on internet way ahead and were not disappointed for we were given a very large room with balcony. (i understand not rooms are like that).
Front desk service was excellent and we were pointed to good restaurants for New Year eve celebrations and breakfast. So all was adequate - except for the tiny TV !
yes there were cob webs on the balcony, but no big deal. If you don't like the outdoor, don't travel to that area of NZ ! In any case, in summer, the arachnids would rebuild them in 2 hours !

Room Tip: book early and ask for room with balcony - inside courtyard is quieter.

Thank you for staying with us, and thank you for your review - we take on board your comments regarding the small TV's, and are in a process for upgrading them for our superior and family units.

I also appreciate your comments re cobwebs - I can assure you that they are cleaned frequently, but as you say the spiders have them back in place with hours - especially in the hot summer months.

“Don't stay here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

The only time I have ever written a negative review, but this hotel was dire! The room was a decent size and clean enough, but I had to scrub bird mess off the chairs on the balcony before we could sit down. The railings are full of cobwebs and look as though they have never been cleaned. On day 2 we went out,but not before discovering a key to our room in the outside keyhole. On returning at 4 in the afternoon, we found the room had not been serviced. When I went down to reception, they apologised for it not being done and offered to do it. No explanation for the key in the lock though. The following morning I learnt from a different receptionist that she didn't know we had been there as the previous receptionist hadn't entered us on the system. She also informed me that the key would have been placed in the outside of our door on the previous night, as we were registered as a "no-show". So we had spent the entire night with a key in the lock on the outside of our door, and it would have been there all day as well if we hadn't noticed it. I don't think our travel insurance would regard that as a valid excuse if someone had stolen all our luggage! This is obviously hotel policy, as many of the rooms had keys in the outside of the doors. We were offered no apology or compensation. Don't stay here!

Room Tip: Don't bother! With staff like that, go elsewhere.

While the management of the hotel deeply regret the situation that Susan H incurred, I emailed her personally the morning after they left - which was when I became aware of the situation.

In this email I explained the issue that had occurred with the change of shifts in reception, and a trainee receptionist taking over. However I can assure her that the key was not left in her door over night.

I would also like to point out that we did offer Susan H a refund of 1 nights accommodation, which she accepted and we have since refunded.

The Heritage Gateway is a 3.5 star property and we pride ourselves on the other reviews that we have received.

“Good location but place needs some work”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

Nice location in a pretty quiet town, reception okay, took one of their upgraded rooms with outside deck which was full of cobwebs, furniture in the room was dated, cleanliness average at best, restaurant was just okay with basic food.

Part of a Thomas Cook Tour. Room 115 with lovely alpine views on the 2nd floor. Shower room needs improvements, lovely bed. We had a welcome note and a box of chocolates to celebrate our anniversary (thanks). Very good tasty breakfast.

“Great Overnight Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

My partner and I stayed here at the end of August just for a night while we spent a weekend skiing at Lake Ohau. The room was aging, but comfy and a good size to spread out and organise all our snow gear. We dinned in the Hotels restaurant for both dinner and breakfast and the food was amazing! Top marks to the Chef! The lady in the bar on the Saturday night was fantastic and talked us into buying a whole bottle of wine instead of just the glass each that we had intended on. Would stay here again without question.
