“Very good lodge but no use if the guide is average”

Boat from Coca takes 3 hours.
Community-based jungle lodge with simple, clean bungalows for 2-3 persons, total max. 30 persons. The service at the lodge itself was very good. There is free WiFi, free water, tea and coffee. Rubber boots and rain ponchos are provided if asked for. Food is ok and there is a good variety. The program is only partly fixed, the group being able to decide on the program for 1-2 days on the evening before. We had bad luck with our guides, who were freelancers. The naturalist guide was a very quiet person, who did not speak English but was knowledgeable.  The english-speaking guide did not know much. Both of them were often running ahead of the group talking in private while we were trying to spot animals.

“The Emeral Forest”

My daughter and sister-in-law and I spent four nights in the Lodge. The boat ride was a joy! Long, but better because of it. When we received our lunches wrapped in large leaves and tied with raffia, we knew we were in the right place! Javier, our guide, was extraordinarily knowledgeable. He and his brother have a rivalry to see who can sight, identify and name more birds. Javier had been well over 450 when we traveled with him. I particularly loved paddling the dugout canoe, both with Javier and by myself. I was able to see a troop of spider monkeys swinging low through the trees overhanging the water right above my head! And the "Stairway to Heaven" above the canopy by the emergent ceiba (kapok) tree was a wonder, but the tree itself was was even more wondrous. I loved the leafcutter ants winding through the Lodge grounds. The buildings are so beautiful and the food was great! Next time, when we go back, we'll try to go when the scarlet macaws are there. Highly recommended.

“A slice of the Amazon”

A great isolated lodge in the Amazon run and owned by the local tribe members. Food was good, my tent comfrotable and the location beautiful and serene. I would have liked more and more rigorous trekking options, but what we did was pretty great. Our guide was top notch (shout out to Olger). He was a local who spoke great English and had a remarkable depth of knowledge about the area and it's varied species. A highlight of my trip to Ecuador.

Room Tip: I stayed in a tent just a five minute canoe ride from the main lodge (three if you know how to oar a...

“Good Trip for Family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

I went with a family containing 2 adults and 2 children ages 11 and 7. During our stay the food was good and our room was nice but basic. The activities organized were entertaining for all those participated and the kids really enjoyed using the blow darts. The fishing trip was a bit average as the rods are pieces of bamboo with 3m of line tied on the end. Not ideal but still caught some fish. Not a lot of animals to see here though which is disappointing. I did go to the clay lick which was a long day but I probably won't see that again, so it was good.

“very special jungle lodge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

i had a great time at Sani. i was attracted to it because it is fully owned by the local kichwa community and far from roads. they don't allow oil production and have stopped hunting near to the lodge so you see more wildlife than in other places. it's a bit dearer than some others but it is more remote than some cheaper ones and you can negotiate over the price. you can book direct thru their office in Quito.
the setting on a lagoon reached by rowing canoe is magical. we swam in the lagoon. the jungle walks are full of amazing wildlife. we were even able to touch the boa constrictor we saw - while it was strangling the guide's hand..... i particularly enjoyed the night walk and seeing the caiman at night. bird lovers have a wonderful time as there are so many species to see. it's really beautiful and peaceful to be rowed around the mangroves.
the cabins are comfy with cold showers which was fine given the heat. the camping is on a separate island reached by canoe and some people choose to stay there for the peace and lack of people plus buildings so you see more.
something i wasn't expecting was that the food was fabulous. 3 course meals at lunch and dinner and an amazing breakfast. you also get drinks and snacks at other times eg on or after walks and on the canoe to and from the lodge to Coca. it was the best food i have had in Ecuador. purified water is always available.

all the staff were really lovely too. you are met at the airport both on departure in quito, arrival at sani and taken back to the airport for your return.
we visited the community and it was a pity this had to be a Sunday as there was noone there. wish we could have gone on a weekday but this wasn't poss due to our schedule.

the only negatives were that i did piranha fishing twice and it would have been better to do something different one of those times. my cabin didn't have enough curtains which meant it lacked privacy. the evening meals were eaten by groups plus their guides separately and i think it would have been nicer to let people sit where they wanted or at least to have a big shared table. I was stuck with some rather unfriendly fellow tourists and had met some others at a previous hostal but when i sat with the latter for one meal i felt this breached 'expectations' somehow. our guide was very knowledgeable but seemed weary, maybe because he was coming up for a break, and he had favourites. we learned a lot from him tho. the junior guide, Jeison was really sweet and had amazing eyesight noticing small animals at a distance which we would never have seen in a million years.

it has been a highlight of my trip and i am so pleased i went. i really recommend sani lodge.
