“Absolutely wonderful”

A somewhat hidden “gem in Mindo.” Just ½ block off the main busy street making it very quiet. Rooms are very clean and have the most wonderful HOT showers.

Don’t know when it got painted but the colors are no longer as shown on the pictures, it is very restful. Sorry we don’t have any pix of the place.

THE BEST COFFEE WE FOUND IN ALL OF ECUADOR, and just $1 for a huge cup, made to order for you, not out of a pot that’s getting old.

Sue (the Su part of CasCaffeSu) could not have been more helpful, even when she seemed very busy she always had time to give us tips and useful information. She made reservations for us (for free) for the “frog concert” which is another ‘must see’ but don’t pay the big bucks to stay at Mindo Lago, not worth $75/night when you can stay at Cascaffesu for $16.

Another surprise came when we checked out and found the $16.00 per person/per night that is advertised, included all tax, the room is really just over $14 before tax, etc. Very honest people. They may have given a little discount to our tour guide, we're not sure.

Had dinner one night, a delicious steak dinner with all the trimmings and it only came to something near $20 for my husband and I, including beer and wine. The chefs cook with lots of garlic so it smells heavenly when you walk in.

Will probably never be there again but highly recommend it for anyone looking for a quite, clean, inexpensive place to stay where you feel safe and can actually eat the delicious foods they prepare with lots of care for the American belly...

They do allow their dog in the dining room - I have alergies but just kept my distance.

Room Tip: We only saw the rooms we stayed in and they were very quiet. They were facing the little garden/cour...

“Clearly the best in Mindo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We stayed at CasKaffeSu for 4 days, one more than we had planned, because we really enjoyed not just Mindo but also Luis´ and Susan´s wonderful hotel. They are warm and super helpful. The food is excellent. The hotel itself is a work of art -- most unusual and quite lovely. Beautiful garden, clean and simple but sweet rooms (the king-size bed room was worth the little bit extra for us), and terrific service all around. We hope to return someday, and will most certainly stay again.

“Didn't bother staying here.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Wanted to stay here on advice from trip advisor. Called on a Sunday. The person on the phone said that there was only one room available for one night. Kinda hard to believe when Mindo was like a ghost town the entire three days I was there. I also went by the restaurant in the evening which was empty.

The worst part was that the owner wanted a deposit from pay pal or western union that day. An inconvenience for your avg traveller staying at hostals.

All of this makes me agree with the previous posters comments about being pretentious.

I know that the owner will probably post a response in defense, all I can say is don't believe everthing you read on trip advisor.

We take reservations seriously, that's why we ask for a 50% deposit. Without that assurance, guests may not show up (we learned the hard way the first year we were open) and hostals may leave their guests without a room (something guests have complained about with other establishments). Paypal is a very easy and effective way to reserve, and we have received payments through them from travelers from the US, Canada, South America, all over Europe and even from foreigners living here in Ecuador. We have never used Western Union, and neither my husband nor myself (who are the only two who take reservations) would have suggested that.
As far as only having one room available when town was empty, this writer is right that there were hardly any tourists, but there was an international film crew staying in Mindo and we were full or almost full with their staff from Dec. 31st through Jan. 12th, as were another hostal and most of the resorts in the Mindo area.
I find it kind of ironic that someone who never stayed here feels confident enough to rate our price, rooms, cleanliness and service. But, as the he/she said, "Don't believe everything you read on Trip Advisor."

“Fine Family owned and run Hotel/Restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

Caskaffesu is owned and operated by an American expatriate and her Ecuadoran husband. Both are excellent hosts and English speaking. It is located in the center of the small town of Mindo, itself located in a prime clould forest recreation area. The rooms are quite comfortable and there is a small courtyard at the center, but it is the restaurant in the front that is the star, and it is the lady of the house Susan St. Alban and her chef who prepare delightful meals and the most tasty, locally grown coffee. Do treat yourself to dinner here even if staying elsewhere. But then why stay elsewhere within the town when the best restaurnat among several good local dining options is to be found at the foot of the stairs leading to your room? It's safe, snug and there's Wifi.

“calm, peacefull, safe and a great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

I stayed in CasKaffeSu for 4 nights in November 2011. The owner, Susan arranged a bird guide in advance to pick me up in Quito and bird the back road over to Mindo, what a fantastic day birding with Julia and her husband Franklin. The food was good in the restaurant, and after early morning bird trips the restaurant and hotel was a great place to hang out, connect to the free Wifi, have an expresso drink or gin and tonic. Just around the corner is a little bakery that makes chocolate cinnamon rolls (going through serious withdrawals on those). This hotel in town is a fine base to use for birding, in just a few minutes you can bird in the yellow house reserve ($6 for 2 days), or walk up the road behind town into some fine birding habitat. I highly recommend Julia as a guide- she is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgable of her birds. And Franklin, her husband, is a very safe driver. Since I only had a week in Ecuador, and wanted to focus my birding in Mindo, the transport to and from Quito and a bird guide made the week really worthwhile- thanks to Susan making the arrangements!
