We stayed at the Makena Surf in building F, in a second story 2 bedroom unit for 2 weeks in January, with our 14 month old son. The unit was in average condition, and the couches looked like they could use a thorough cleaning, which was quickly solved by putting a couple of bedspreads over the couch cushions. The cleanliness issue was in part due to the condo having been vacated only the afternoon before and the staff not having had time to steam clean, or do a thorough clean.
To their credit the housekeeping staff were extremely courteous and cleaned the carpets our second day there. Throughout our stay, the housekeeping and grounds staff were just amazing, very polite and friendly. Generally other guests seemed to be older people and people with young families, so it was quiet and people were quite friendly.
The best thing about the Makena Surf is the location. The beach is on the property, a 2 minute walk from the unit, and while it is public, there were never more than a few families or couples on it. Our lanai was ocean view, and being able to cook and spend time with visiting family in the evenings rather than go through the pain of small children in restaurants was great. The snorkeling is great, and as the MS is located near the end of Alanui Blvd, we were able to go for fantastic long runs most mornings along the beach on the footpath behind the Wailea resort strip.
Overall, the MS felt very safe and incredibly relaxing. Having a toddler introduces all kinds of unexpected stress on vacations, so the close physical proximity of the beach to the unit meant napping, diaper changes, and meal times were stress free. The lack of crowds and the family atmosphere meant our son could run and play without annoying anyone or without us worrying about losing track of him. We intend to return again this year.
