This bed and breakfast gave my wife and I an opportunity to enjoy our 10th anniversary in far greater luxury than we spend our ordinary lives. We had the Alcoba Ghirlandio for 8 days and when we left we wanted to find a way to just move in and stay permanently.
The accomodations are splendid - the bed large with perfect high count linens, the grand bath (large enough to park any american sedan) came with honeyed soaps, sumptiously scented towels (which had us wondering where we could find their fabric softener) and the food was quite well-preparred (and great coffee).
Belem and Demetrio hosted well. Each morning our breakfast had four terrific courses: Yoghurt, fruit with cheese or chocolate, an egg course and then dulce pans. The table linen, silver flatware and talavera was lovely and the classical music in the atrium put us in a grand calm state each morning.
Each afternoon we enjoyed the small rooftop jacuzzi and it's view of the pyramid and the Remedios church as well as the skyline of Cholula. A few times we were lucky enough to see steam from the Popcateptal volcano & Iztaccuihuatl mountains across the valley floor.
We must have jogged up to Remedios 10 times over our stay and visited innumerable nearby barrio churches. We've stayed in Puebla previously and knew what Cholula was about; the recent replacement of the blacktp streets with cobblestones might add a hint of charm to what is already a great base for visits to central Mexico.
The zocalo in Cholula has a much warmer and charming way of demonstrating family values than you're likely to find north of the border. The restaurants along Portal Guerrero consistently preparred fine meals for us and is a short walk from Estrella Belem.
Each night we were rewarded with large chocolate truffles and twice with tasty cheese plates and wines (both of Spanish vintage).
The rooms really are exquisite and the only faults I can find with them probably say more about me: the tall rooms echo more than I would expect, and the TV was a bit small. These are really triffling complaints & we did not let these concerns affect our stay.
In the end, we kind of felt like maybe pampered ecclesiastics. Except we're a whole lot less holy.
