It’s hard to decide where to begin when describing a beach resort as disappointing as the igloos at Holiday Village Dor.
We were shocked when we entered our igloo – it smelled of dampness, the walls were patched up and ugly and the air conditioner wasn’t cooling (we would have called the front desk but there were no phones in the igloo) so we removed the AC cover and found filters thick with dirt...we washed them in the sink.
One of the slats in the AC was missing and the air flow was uneven. A kind of trellis hung over the bed and it was filthy.
There was no shampoo and no hairdryer in the bathroom. The water backed up to the sides of the shower stall whenever someone took a shower. There was no safe to leave valuables in and the room key was the old fashioned kind with the room number on it.
Instead of feeling like we were on a beach vacation with a view of the sea, the nearly windowless 50 year old cement dome made us feel like we were in a prison.
Unfortunately the beach was no better.....the sandy area was narrow and strewn with trash. People were barbequing everywhere and the smoke was annoying.
The lifeguards on Dor beach went off duty while the sea was still full of bathers at 6:30 pm -- the nicest time of day to swim as the sun isn’t harsh.
All of these minuses might have been tolerable if the price had been very low ...but the price was exorbitant – nearly $300 per night.
The next time I want to spend almost $300 a night for a beach holiday in Israel I’ll go to a luxury hotel on the beach in Herzliya or Eilat.
