RE: Hotel Grand Soleil, Natchez, Ms
I am a local business man with offices in the Miss-Lou and Texas and have been attending the festivities in this area for over twelve years. One of the many things that I have been proud of is the way the local community supports its businesses and the efforts put into promoting the different events that lure business into our area, the annual Balloon Race being one of the most successful and entertaining. In keeping with the spirit of supporting my community, I try to spend as many of my dollars locally as possible.
Approximately two months ago, after dining in their restaurant, our company decided to book rooms at the Grand Soleil Hotel for the balloon races in order for our company personnel and friends to have a place to gather to enjoy the activities. At that time an associate and I were told that there were plenty of rooms available. We requested two rooms with a river view above and facing the pool area. We were told that this would be no problem and were quoted a rate of $99.00 per night. We decided to take advantage of the early rate and held the rooms on our company business credit card. On October 15th, the day we were to check in, we were told that they did not have two rooms, but one king suite with a river view facing the pool for the same price originally quoted. After going up and finding the room, we found that the room faced the parking lot and had one window on the back side with a slight view of the other end of the river where no balloon activity could be seen. Since there were no other rooms available, we told them we would keep the room with the option to move if one came available (this was approximately noon of that day). During the balloon glow Friday evening, we sat at the pool area entertaining our associates and friends who stopped by, all the while ordering food and beverages from their outside bar and restaurant on a cash basis.
On Friday evening, while on the elevator, we ran into two adorable older ladies who were very upset that they had reserved two rooms at the $99 rate weeks before and when they arrived they were told they did not have but one room even though there were five ladies in their party. They were told they would have to take the one room which was $159 per night and were charged $20 per extra person in that room over two people. Of course they too, had to take the room since it was too late to make other arrangements (these ladies later told us they were reporting this incident to the Chamber of Commerce in Natchez). After we returned to the pool area, we ran into a couple we knew from New Orleans, who said they had called earlier in the week and were told there were no rooms, but if one came available they would be contacted and offered the $99 per nite rate. They then made arrangements to come on down and “play it by ear”, but while driving in on Friday, the Hotel called them and said they had one room available, but now the price was $159 per nite. They were given that room. Now, we were to be notified if another room came available, the poor elderly ladies were put into one room and charged for each person extra and the Hotel is calling other folks quoting those rooms (which should have been ours, or the nice ladies) at even higher prices. Even though we had been exposed to the old “bait and switch” scam, we were yet to find out the greatest rip off. When we checked out of the Hotel on Sunday morning, they charged our company $199 per nite instead of the originally quoted and accepted price of $99 per nite. Since there were witnesses present when we were quoted this price and location of the room we were to have, we do plan to file complaints for the deceptive practices that the Hotel is using on the good folks and tourists coming to enjoy our city, as well as discontinuing any services that our company or any associates may now have or might have in the future.
Thank you for your time and I do hope this information will help to stop the Hotel Soleil from harming the good reputation of our community.
Sincerely,
Albert E. Clifton, CEO
