“Dizzy Heights Hotel. One of the oddest experiences of my life.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2010

It is worth noting that we did not book here based on anything other than the fact that the attached Villa Napoli was used in BBC's Gavin and Stacey, so we shouldn't really complain.

However, staff seemed totally untrained in hotel management, reminded me of the mafia in Only Fools and Horses 'Miami Twice'. Corridors and fire exits cluttered with old furniture...surely a hazard?

The room itself was like a paradise buried deep within a rubbish tip. Totally bizarre, the fixtures and fittings of the hotel were as old and tired as the hills, but the room must have been very recently rennovated. It was beautiful!

The attached restaurant menu claimed to offer massages at £5! A joke, maybe, but the entire waiting staff seemed like they had their sense of humour surgically removed. It came across as weird.

“Nice room, great food, good atmosphere!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

If you want to go somewere with friendly staff and great food .. Stay here. Good location to the motorway and close to Cardiff bay. From now on I will definitely stay here rather than at a chain hotel. Would recommend this place to any of my friends. *****

“Fantastic!!”

As a regular visitor to cardiff on business, I regularly stay in the city. Like many on a business trip, I normally stay in hotel chains such as Travel lodge. Premier inn etc. On a recent visit to the city I was unable to stay in any of the previously mentioned hotels. Any way to cut a long story short - Myself and several business colleagues booked into the Glendale Hotel in Plymouth road, we were given a great welcome at the hotel, the staff were fantastic and nothing was to much trouble. I can not ever remember coming away from a hotel with such a positive opinion - by the end of the week the staff felt more like friends than just staff. The Hotel also combines one of the best, if not the best italian resteraunt I have ever eaten in. All my colleagues were of the same opinion, that the whole experience was a total joy....... we will certainly not be booking into any other hotels if the Glendale is available??!! A BIG BIG thankyou to Tony, Gregor, Franko, Stacey, And special thanks to the chef,,,, Damien we believe??
Mr Burke and all the guys and girls from A.T.W.L (See you all real soon)

“Don't stay here!”

The Glendale, AKA Villa Napoli, is scuffy and tired! The place is rundown.
People you meet in Penarth say it has great food, though only a few have actually recently eaten there.
We have previously eaten there and the evening food was good, but this time while on an extended stay we only had breakfasts.
The kitchen ran out of bread during 1 breakfast when my wife just wanted toast and jam!

Quite frankly we did not want to eat an evening meal there anyway after having seen the diningroom in daylight!
It's very tired and scruffy, although I suppose that candlelight, and a few drinks does somewhat disguise things in the evening.
I noticed that the evening meal prices were in the same pricerange as the new JAMIE (Oliver) ITALIAN restaurant in Cardiff !
Go across the road to The RAILWAY Pub and eat there if you are hungry and on a budget. The pints there are also cheaper.

The Glendales rooms are tired and dirty. Somewhat cleaner than we experienced on a previous trip. Though not much!
The bedroom windows were a horror in windy conditions.
Don't sleep in a bed close to a window unless you are considering becoming a Polar Explorer.

The shower (one of those without a thermostat and activated by the infamous 'pullup' knob from the bath taps) was IMPOSSIBLE to tame and either scolded you or made you think that you were at the North Pole. In another room close by it was impossible to get any HOT water. Room cleaning was something that the 'young lad from ??? ' had not quite mastered. Making beds was obviously not something he had learned from his mother and was for him just a question of throwing the bedcover over the already rumpled sheets. Forget about getting your pillows plumped up - they lie undisturbed just like you left them. Topping up of teabags/milk/coffee is also something that he is not yet used to doing. Still he might learn to do it before you go there - if you dare!

The staff are superfriendly but the whole place needs a complete makeover!.
